Trekking Socks Nepal Wool vs Synthetic

Socks are arguably the most impactful piece of kit for blister prevention and foot comfort on Nepal treks. The wool versus synthetic debate has a clear answer for most situations.

Overview

Socks are the most replaced gear item after long Nepal treks. Most trekkers start with inadequate sock choices and discover the problem at blister stage. The correct trekking sock for Nepal has three properties: moisture management (wicking sweat away from skin), cushioning in the heel and ball of foot, and a close fit that does not bunch or shift inside the boot.

Merino wool socks (Smartwool, Darn Tough, Icebreaker) are the preferred choice for multi-day Nepal trekking for the same reasons as merino base layers: odour resistance that allows two to three days of use between washes and superior moisture management. Merino is also naturally temperature-regulating โ€” warmer in cold teahouses and less clammy during sweaty ascents than synthetic. The trade-off is slower drying after washing compared to synthetic.

Synthetic trekking socks (Thorlo, Wrightsock, Balega) dry faster and cost less. Wrightsock in particular uses a double-layer construction that creates a friction interface inside the sock rather than against skin, significantly reducing blister formation. For trekkers prone to blisters, this is worth prioritising over the odour management benefits of merino.

Pack four to six pairs for a two-week trek. Rotate daily, hand wash with opportunity at lower teahouses. Hang to dry on the outside of your pack during walking days โ€” merino dries in three to four hours in Himalayan sun.

Thickness: medium-weight crew-height socks are the standard choice for boot trekking in Nepal. Lightweight liner socks worn under a medium sock further reduce friction and add moisture management.

FAQ

Q: Are wool socks warm enough for cold nights above 4,500 metres?
A: For sleeping, add a dedicated heavyweight merino wool sock layer over your standard sock. Your sleeping bag handles most warmth; the extra sock layer protects toes from cold feet of sleeping bag.

Q: Can I buy good trekking socks in Kathmandu?
A: Genuine Smartwool and Darn Tough are available at quality outdoor shops in Thamel. Expect to pay comparable to or slightly above Western retail prices.
