Trekking Gloves Nepal Layering System

Hands are the first extremity to suffer in Nepal cold. A two-layer glove system covers every temperature condition from Kathmandu valley to Thorong La pass.

Overview

Nepal trekking gloves follow the same layering logic as body clothing: a thin liner layer for active warmth management, and a heavier outer layer for cold stops and high-altitude sections. Carrying both layers at 150-200 grams combined weight covers every temperature condition encountered on standard routes.

Liner gloves: merino wool or thin synthetic gloves that allow dexterity for camera operation, map reading, and trekking pole adjustment. These are worn throughout the day on sections above 3,500 metres. Sealskinz Ultragripper or Icebreaker Oasis 200 liner gloves are practical choices at under 100 grams per pair.

Outer gloves or mittens: for pass crossings, cold mornings below freezing, and high camps above 5,000 metres. Softshell gloves (Black Diamond Guide Gloves) provide excellent dexterity with wind and light water resistance up to minus ten degrees Celsius. Hardshell mitts (OR Alti Mitts, Mountain Hardwear Hydra Gore-Tex) are warmer but sacrifice dexterity โ€” appropriate for Thorong La crossing conditions in winter or spring.

At Kala Patthar (5,644 m) dawn, temperatures can reach minus fifteen to minus twenty with windchill. At these temperatures, bare hand exposure during camera operation or trekking pole adjustment causes rapid cooling. Fingerless gloves beneath mitts allow brief dexterity while main warmth is preserved.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Wet gloves at altitude lose insulating value rapidly. Keep a dry spare liner pair in a sealed bag in your day pack โ€” use the dry pair in emergencies.

FAQ

Q: Do I need waterproof gloves for Nepal?
A: Waterproof gloves are useful in monsoon-edge conditions and for river crossing sections. For dry season trekking, softshell is usually adequate and more breathable.

Q: Can I buy gloves in Kathmandu?
A: Yes. Thamel stocks a wide range from genuine brands to budget alternatives. Inspect insulation quality โ€” budget gloves often have minimal fill that loses warmth rapidly when compressed.
