Tansen Guesthouses: Hill Town Charm in Western Nepal
Tansen (Palpa) is a medieval hill town in western Nepal with wonderful old bazaar streets, dhaka weaving workshops, and a handful of atmospheric guesthouses that most tourists completely overlook.
Overview
Tansen (also called Palpa), perched at 1,371 m in Palpa District of western Nepal, is one of the most rewarding off-the-beaten-path destinations in the country. A former Sen kingdom capital, its medieval town centre has stone-paved bazaar streets, traditional Newari and Muslim merchant houses, and the famous Tansen dhaka fabric (hand-woven geometric cloth used for shawls, bags, and traditional dress). The town sees a fraction of Kathmandu and Pokhara's tourist traffic but rewards those who make the four-hour bus journey from Pokhara.
Best Guesthouses
Hotel Srinagar (top of the hill, above the bazaar) has the best views -- the Butwal plains and distant Annapurna Range are visible from the rooftop on clear days. Rooms NPR 2,000 to 4,000 with Newari architectural details. The only hotel in Tansen with a pool (small but functional).
The Nanglo Tansen Cafe and Lodge in the old bazaar is the most atmospheric option -- a traditional merchant building with 10 rooms (NPR 1,500 to 2,500) and an excellent cafe serving local Newari dishes and filter coffee.
White Lake Hotel on the Pokhara road approaching Tansen is a budget option at NPR 800 to 1,200 for clean rooms without character but with reliable wi-fi and hot water.

What to Do in Tansen
The Bhairav Temple on the main square has a 1.5-metre-high mask of Bhairav (Shiva's terrifying form) that is one of Nepal's finest examples of Newari metalwork. Dhaka weaving shops in the bazaar sell fabric direct from weavers at NPR 800 to 3,000 per metre depending on thread count and complexity.
FAQ
How do I get to Tansen from Pokhara?
Regular buses from Baglung bus park in Pokhara take 4 to 5 hours (NPR 250 to 350). The road is winding but scenic. Private taxi hire costs NPR 4,000 to 6,000.
Is Tansen worth combining with Lumbini?
Absolutely -- Tansen is 65 km from Lumbini by road. A two-night itinerary combining Tansen and Lumbini gives you medieval Newari culture plus Buddhist pilgrimage in an uncrowded western Nepal circuit.
Can I buy dhaka fabric for export from Tansen?
Yes. Dhaka fabric is freely exportable and is not subject to heritage export restrictions. The bazaar shops can recommend quality pieces and package them for airline carry-on.
