Sarangkot Sunset and Sunrise: A Couples Guide
How to experience the famous Sarangkot viewpoint as a couple, including sunrise timing, transport, and nearby romantic spots.
Sarangkot is one of Nepal's most iconic viewpoints, sitting at 1,592 metres above Pokhara and offering unobstructed views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. For couples, it is one of the most naturally romantic settings in the country.
What You Will See
On clear mornings, the Annapurna massif stretches from Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) in the west to Manaslu (8,163 m) in the east. The centrepiece is Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), the distinctive fishtail peak that is considered sacred and has never been officially climbed to the summit. At sunrise, the golden light illuminates the snow faces and the colour shifts from deep purple to orange to brilliant white over roughly 45 minutes.
In the evening, sunset creates similar but softer colour effects. The Pokhara valley spreads below with Phewa Lake catching the light, and on clear days the mountain silhouettes remain visible until just after the sun drops.
Getting There
By taxi: The easiest option for couples. A taxi from Lakeside Pokhara to Sarangkot takes 20-25 minutes on a winding road. Agree on the fare before departure. For a sunrise visit, the taxi will cost NPR 800-1,200 from Lakeside. Ask your hotel to arrange a reliable driver who knows the road.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
On foot: The trek from Pokhara's Khadipani area to Sarangkot takes 1.5-2 hours and climbs approximately 400 metres. It is a legitimate hike with stairs for much of the route. This option suits couples who are reasonably fit and want to arrive at the viewpoint as daylight breaks.
Timing
For sunrise, you need to arrive at the viewpoint before 5:30 am in summer (May-August) and before 6:30 am in winter (November-February). The actual sunrise time depends on the time of year. Your hotel or a quick online search will tell you today's sunrise time for Pokhara.
Plan to be at the viewpoint 30-40 minutes before sunrise. This gives you time to find a good spot and settle before the colour show begins.
For sunset, arrive 30-45 minutes before the sun goes down. The mountain glow after sunset often rivals the sunset itself.
What to Bring
- Warm layers: Sarangkot is noticeably cooler than Pokhara town, especially at dawn. Even in April, a jacket is necessary before 8 am.
- Water and snacks: Several small teahouses operate at the viewpoint, but bringing your own means you are not dependent on their limited opening hours.
- Camera with a wide lens: The mountain panorama is too wide for a standard smartphone frame. A wide-angle lens captures the full sweep.
Restaurants and Viewpoint Lodges
Several lodge-restaurants operate at Sarangkot's main viewpoint. They serve breakfast from around 5:30 am for sunrise visitors. Dal bhat, eggs, and toast are the standard options. The quality varies but the setting makes everything taste better.
Some couples choose to stay overnight at a Sarangkot lodge. This eliminates the early morning taxi scramble and lets you experience the mountains in both evening and morning light. Basic rooms cost NPR 500-1,500 per night.
Paragliding Connection
Most Pokhara paragliding flights launch from just below the Sarangkot viewpoint. If you are planning to paraglide (a popular couple activity), you can combine a dawn sunrise visit with a mid-morning paragliding session before returning to Pokhara for lunch.
Photography Tips for Couples
The best couple photographs at Sarangkot use the mountain panorama as a background. Arrive before crowds build (pre-8 am on busy days) for uncluttered shots. The viewpoint has a broad terrace and several lower lookout platforms that offer slightly different angles. Explore before settling on your spot.
Silhouette shots work beautifully here: position yourselves between the camera and the sky just as the orange light begins, and the mountains create a dramatic backdrop.
