Solo Travel Pokhara Guide: The Perfect Base for Adventure

Pokhara is the second city of Nepal and the undisputed capital of adventure tourism. Sitting at 827 metres above sea level on the shore of Phewa Lake with the Annapurna massif filling the northern horizon on clear days, the city is dramatically beautiful. For solo travelers, it combines easy orientation, a well-established tourist economy, and immediate access to world-class trekking.

Neighborhoods

Lakeside (Baidam) is where virtually all tourists stay and it functions as a self-contained village within the city. Restaurants, bars, gear shops, travel agencies, and guesthouses line the main street that runs parallel to Phewa Lake. It is compact enough to cover entirely on foot. New Road (Newroad Bazar) is where Pokhara residents shop and eat — cheaper food and a more authentic atmosphere just 10 minutes by tempo from Lakeside.

Getting There

The tourist bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara takes 6 to 7 hours and costs around NPR 800 to 1,000 for a tourist-class seat. Greenline offers the most comfortable option with onboard attendants and a lunch stop, though at roughly NPR 2,500 it is pricier. Pokhara airport receives domestic flights from Kathmandu on Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines — the 25-minute flight costs around NPR 5,000 to 8,000 depending on timing. Pokhara International Airport opened in 2023 though international commercial services are still limited.

Solo Activities

Paragliding from Sarangkot is one of the world's top paragliding destinations and completely accessible solo — you fly tandem with a licensed pilot. Standard 30-minute flights cost USD 80 to 120 and include transport to the launch site. Book directly with licensed operators at Lakeside to avoid commission markups.

Boating on Phewa Lake — rent a rowboat for NPR 300 to 500 per hour and paddle to Tal Barahi Temple on the lake island. Early mornings are best for reflections of the Annapurnas on the water.

Sarangkot sunrise is a 90-minute uphill walk or a short taxi ride from Lakeside. The viewpoint overlooks the entire Pokhara Valley with Machapuchare (Fish Tail), Annapurna South, and Dhaulagiri visible on clear mornings. Arrive by 5:30 AM in season.

Day Hikes

The Australian Camp trail from Kande is a popular half-day hike through Gurung villages with Annapurna views. No permit needed. The Peace Stupa (World Peace Pagoda) on the ridge south of Phewa Lake is a 45-minute uphill walk from the lakeside trail — the views over the lake and Pokhara city are excellent.
