Solo Travel Nepal Packing List: Everything You Need and Nothing You Don't
A complete, tested packing list for solo travelers in Nepal covering trekking essentials, city travel, electronics, documents, and what to buy in Kathmandu versus bringing from home.
Packing for Nepal requires balancing two very different environments: urban Kathmandu and Pokhara (warm, dusty, cosmopolitan) and high-altitude mountain trails (cold, wet, remote). Getting this balance right means neither overpacking for the city nor underpacking for altitude. This list is calibrated for a 2 to 3 week trip that includes both a major trek and urban time.
The Backpack
A 40 to 50 litre main pack covers most solo Nepal itineraries that include a standard trek. The classic Osprey Atmos (50L) and Deuter Futura (42L) have proven track records on Nepal trails. For multi-section trips where you leave your main pack in Kathmandu or Pokhara while trekking with a day pack, a 25 to 30 litre daypack (Osprey Daylite Plus or similar) serves as the trekking carry.
Trekking Clothing (The Core List)
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
- Moisture-wicking base layer top x2 (Merino wool preferred for odour management)
- Insulating mid-layer (100-200 weight fleece or down jacket)
- Waterproof/windproof shell jacket (essential; do not substitute with a poncho on mountain terrain)
- Trekking pants x2 (zip-off style saves packing a separate shorts option)
- Thermal leggings x1 (for sleeping at altitude and cold passes)
- Merino wool trekking socks x4 pairs
- Liner socks x3 pairs (blister prevention in combination with wool socks)
- Sun hat with brim
- Wool or fleece beanie
- Lightweight gloves (liners) + warm outer gloves for above 4,000m
- Neck gaiter or buff
Footwear
Trail running shoes or lightweight hiking boots are the most versatile choice for the Annapurna Circuit and EBC routes. Full leather mountaineering boots are unnecessary on standard trekking routes. Bring flip-flops or sandals for teahouse evenings, as removing hiking boots promptly reduces foot problems.
Trekking Gear
- Trekking poles x2 (collapsible; available to rent in Kathmandu and Pokhara for NPR 150-300/day, cheaper to rent than to fly with)
- Headlamp with spare batteries (Petzl Actik Core or Black Diamond Spot Lite are compact and bright)
- Sleeping bag liner (teahouses provide blankets but a liner adds warmth and hygiene)
- Daypack (20-25L) for summit days and day hikes
- Water bottles x2 (1L Nalgene or equivalent) plus purification tabs or SteriPen
- Sunscreen SPF50+ โ UV intensity increases significantly at altitude; apply every 2 hours above 3,000m
- Lip balm with SPF
Electronics
- Phone (offline maps downloaded)
- Portable charger (20,000mAh minimum for multi-day trekking)
- Universal travel adapter (Type D/M in Nepal, same as India)
- Camera and charging cable
- Earphones
- GPS tracker if trekking remotely (Garmin inReach Mini 2)
Medical Kit
- Diamox (acetazolamide) for AMS prevention โ get prescription before leaving home; available in Kathmandu but source from home is more reliable
- Standard first aid: blister treatment, bandages, antiseptic wipes, medical tape
- Ibuprofen and paracetamol
- Oral rehydration salts
- Antihistamine
- Imodium (antidiarrheal)
- Personal prescription medications with sufficient supply
Documents (Physical Copies Carried Separately from Phone)
- Passport + 2 photocopies
- Travel insurance policy with 24-hour emergency number
- Visa documentation
- Emergency contacts list (written, not just stored on phone)
- Permit copies (TIMS, ACAP, or relevant park permits)
What to Buy in Kathmandu
Gear rental in Thamel โ trekking poles, sleeping bags, crampons, down jackets โ is widely available at quality comparable to international brands. Buying locally-made Buff-style neck gaiters, wool hats, and cotton trekking shirts is far cheaper than importing them. The Thamel gear shops carry genuine equipment from The North Face, Black Diamond, and Osprey alongside very good local alternatives at a fraction of the price.
