Solo Travel Nepal Festivals: Timing Your Trip Around the Country's Greatest Celebrations

A guide to Nepal's major festivals and how solo travelers can plan around and participate in them, from Dashain and Tihar to Indra Jatra and Holi.

Nepal follows the Bikram Sambat lunar calendar, which means festival dates shift each year relative to the Gregorian calendar. Planning your solo trip around a major festival adds an unforgettable dimension to the experience โ€” the country transforms during Dashain and Tihar in particular, with public celebrations, family gatherings, and cultural performances that open windows into Nepali life that are closed during ordinary days.

Dashain (September/October)

Nepal's most important festival, spanning 15 days in the lunar month of Ashwin (usually September or October in the Gregorian calendar). It celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur and is the equivalent of Christmas in terms of social significance โ€” schools close, families reunite, and government offices operate on reduced hours.

For solo travelers, the most visually spectacular days are Fulpati (Day 7), Maha Ashtami (Day 8), and Vijaya Dashami (Day 10), when the Hanuman Dhoka palace in Kathmandu Durbar Square hosts state rituals and military processions. Animal sacrifice at major Durga temples (Dakshinkali Temple outside Kathmandu, Manakamana Temple in Gorkha) occurs on Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami โ€” be prepared for the sight if you visit.

Planning this trip? ๐ŸŽ’

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Practical note: accommodation must be booked well in advance for Dashain week. Many local buses and transport reduce services during the festival as drivers return to home villages. Plan logistics carefully.

Tihar (October/November)

The five-day Festival of Lights follows Dashain by two to three weeks. Streets are decorated with marigold garlands and oil lamps (diyas), dogs and crows receive formal worship on specific days (Kukur Tihar is widely photographed), and the night of Laxmi Puja transforms Thamel and Patan into a luminous festival. Tihar is more accessible and visually spectacular for visitors than Dashain and coincides with the peak October-November trekking season.

Indra Jatra (August/September)

An eight-day festival unique to Kathmandu Valley celebrating Indra, the deity of rain and harvest. The Living Goddess (Kumari) is carried through Kathmandu in a chariot procession โ€” one of the most extraordinary ritual ceremonies in Asia. The festival takes place in and around Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Holi (February/March)

The festival of colors is celebrated throughout Nepal, particularly in the Terai and in Kathmandu. Colorful powder and water are thrown in public spaces and it is one of the most participatory festivals for foreign visitors. Carry old clothes and protect your camera.

Buddha Jayanti (April/May)

The birth, enlightenment, and death anniversary of the Buddha, celebrated on the full moon of Vaisakh. Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath are the focal points โ€” monks perform rituals, pilgrims circumambulate through the night, and butter lamps are lit in their thousands.

Losar (January/February)

Tibetan New Year is celebrated throughout the Khumbu region and in Boudha with prayer flags raised, monastery rituals, and community feasts. For solo trekkers planning an EBC trek, timing arrival in Namche Bazaar for Losar celebrations adds a remarkable cultural layer.

Calendar Planning

The specific dates of all Nepali festivals for the coming year are published annually by the Nepal Tourism Board (welcomenepal.com). Cross-reference against your intended travel dates in the planning phase.
