Solo Budget Nepal Itinerary: 3 Weeks Under USD 800
A realistic 3-week solo Nepal itinerary on a tight budget, including transport, accommodation, food, permits, and activity costs broken down day by day.
Nepal is one of the most affordable countries in Asia for independent travelers. A solo traveler who plans carefully can have a full three-week experience โ including a major trek โ for under USD 800 in total, excluding international flights. Here is how to do it.
Budget Framework
| Category | Daily Budget |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | NPR 700-1,500 (dorm) or NPR 1,200-2,500 (private) |
| Food (local restaurants) | NPR 800-1,200 |
| Transport (within Nepal) | NPR 200-400 per day on average |
| Activities and permits | Varies โ front-load permit costs |
At NPR 135 to the USD (approximate 2024 rate), a daily budget of NPR 4,000 (roughly USD 30) is feasible if you are disciplined. NPR 5,500 per day (USD 40) gives comfortable headroom.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Days 1-3: Kathmandu
Arrive, recover from jet lag, sort permits for your planned trek at Nepal Tourism Board (Pradarshani Marg, open 10 AM to 4 PM weekdays). Day trips to Bhaktapur and Boudhanath are free to walk to by local tempo and microbus. Budget: USD 25-30/day.
Days 4-5: Bus to Pokhara and settle in
Tourist bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara: NPR 800-1,000. One acclimatisation day in Pokhara โ paragliding is expensive (USD 80-120) but Sarangkot sunrise is free, boating on Phewa Lake is NPR 300-500. Budget: USD 20-25/day.
Days 6-18: Annapurna Base Camp Trek (12 days)
ABC is shorter than the full Circuit and more budget-friendly per day because food costs remain reasonable below 4,000 metres. Round-trip bus to Nayapul or Phedi: NPR 350-500. Teahouse accommodation: NPR 500-1,000/night. Food: NPR 1,000-1,500/day on trail. Permit costs (ACAP + TIMS): NPR 5,000 total. Daily trail budget: USD 25-35 including food and accommodation.
Days 19-21: Back in Pokhara, then bus to Kathmandu and fly out
Two relaxed days in Pokhara, then tourist bus back to Kathmandu (NPR 800-1,000), one night before departure.
Total Cost Estimate (21 days)
| Item | Estimated Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Kathmandu accommodation (3 nights dorm) | 18 |
| Kathmandu food and transport | 45 |
| Pokhara accommodation (3 nights) | 25 |
| Pokhara food and activities | 40 |
| Trek accommodation (12 nights) | 100 |
| Trek food (12 days) | 120 |
| Permits (ACAP + TIMS) | 37 |
| All transport within Nepal | 50 |
| Miscellaneous (SIM, water purification, minor gear) | 30 |
| Total | ~465 |
Adding USD 200-300 for contingencies, a travel insurance buffer, and any unplanned activities brings the total comfortably under USD 800 for 21 days.
Money-Saving Tips
- Eat where Nepali locals eat, not where tourists sit outside โ the food is better and costs half
- Walk within Kathmandu and Pokhara tourist districts instead of taking taxis
- Buy a local SIM on arrival (Ncell or Nepal Telecom โ NPR 500 for SIM + data bundle)
- Use a SteriPen or water purification tablets instead of buying bottled water
- Rent trekking gear in Thamel rather than buying โ saves USD 100-200 versus purchasing poles, sleeping bag liner, and rain gear
