Snake Safety on Nepal Trails

Nepal has several venomous snake species, but bites are rare on established trekking routes. Understanding behaviour and first aid reduces risk and panic.

Overview

Nepal hosts over 100 snake species, of which approximately 20 are venomous. The most clinically significant are the Common Cobra (Naja naja), Banded Krait (Bungarus fasciatus), and several viper species including the Pit Viper (Trimeresurus species) found at mid elevations. Snakes are present below 3,000 metres, particularly in forested sections of trails through the lower Himalayan foothills.

Bites on trekking routes are genuinely rare โ€” snakes avoid confrontation and strike only when startled or stepped on. The highest risk activities are reaching into rock crevices or dense vegetation without looking, sitting on warm rocks in the evening without checking the surface, and walking in long grass at night without a headlamp. Snakes are most active at dusk and dawn.

If bitten: immobilise the affected limb at heart level, remove constricting jewellery or clothing, mark the edge of any swelling with a pen and note the time, and seek medical evacuation immediately. Do not apply tourniquets, cut the wound, attempt to suck venom, or apply ice. These interventions are ineffective and cause additional harm. Antivenom is available in Kathmandu hospitals and is effective when administered promptly.

Above 3,000 metres, snakes are absent โ€” the temperature is too cold for ectothermic reptiles to function. Standard trekking routes at altitude carry no snake risk.

FAQ

Q: How do I tell if a snake is venomous in Nepal?
A: Field identification is unreliable. Treat all snakes as potentially venomous, avoid them, and seek medical attention immediately after any bite regardless of the snake's appearance.

Q: Are snake bites covered by travel insurance?
A: Most comprehensive travel insurance policies cover emergency medical treatment including snake bites and evacuation. Verify your coverage specifically before travel to remote areas.
