School Holiday Nepal Itinerary: 10 and 14-Day Family Plans
Structured 10-day and 14-day Nepal itineraries designed for school holidays, balancing wildlife, culture, trekking, and relaxation for the whole family.
School holiday trips to Nepal work best with a clear structure that balances activity with rest. Families trying to cram too many destinations into a short trip often find themselves exhausted rather than enriched. The following itineraries are designed for families with children aged six and above, using the most reliable and rewarding combination of destinations.
10-Day Nepal Family Itinerary (October-November or March-April)
Days 1-2: Kathmandu. Arrive Kathmandu. Day 1: rest and gentle orientation -- visit Boudhanath Stupa, dinner in Thamel. Day 2: Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) in the morning; Patan Durbar Square in the afternoon. Stock up on any trekking gear or supplies needed.
Days 3-5: Chitwan National Park. Fly Kathmandu to Bharatpur (20 minutes) or take the tourist bus (6 hours). Day 3 afternoon: Tharu cultural show and nature walk in the buffer zone. Day 4: Full day -- morning jeep safari (3 hours), afternoon canoe ride, elephant breeding center. Day 5: Morning bird walk, late morning fly or drive to Pokhara.
Days 6-8: Pokhara. Day 6: Arrive Pokhara, settle at lakeside, afternoon boating on Phewa Lake. Day 7: Pre-dawn Sarangkot sunrise, Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave in the morning, International Mountain Museum in the afternoon. Day 8: Day hike to Australian Base Camp for families with older children; alternatively, a full day at leisure on the lake for families with young children. Teenagers may opt for paragliding.

14-Day Nepal Family Itinerary
Use the 10-day itinerary as a base and add:
Lumbini Extension (Days 5-6 revised): After Chitwan, drive or fly to Lumbini (3 hours by road from Sauraha). Spend two nights. Visit the Sacred Garden and Maya Devi Temple, cycle or walk through the international monastery zone. Then travel to Pokhara (4 hours by road via Butwal).
Bandipur Day Trip (Day 11): From Pokhara, take a morning bus or taxi to Bandipur -- a perfectly preserved hilltop Newari town that is car-free and offers views of both the Annapurna and Ganesh Himal ranges. Walk the main bazaar street, visit the Bindabasini Temple, and return to Pokhara by evening.
Short Trek (Days 9-11 revised for trekking families): Replace the Pokhara leisure day with a two-night, three-day trek to Ghorepani for the Poon Hill sunrise. This trek starts at Nayapul (1 hour from Pokhara by taxi), is well-serviced with tea houses, and reaches a maximum of 3,210 m.
Booking Tips
Book domestic flights at least four weeks in advance during school holiday peak periods (October, December-January, March-April). Chitwan lodges fill quickly -- book safari packages in advance. Pack light -- a 20-liter day pack per person is sufficient for most 10-14 day itineraries if you do laundry on the road, which is available cheaply at most guesthouses.
