Sarangkot Photography: Golden Hour and Sunrise Tips
Sarangkot above Pokhara is Nepal's most accessible Himalayan sunrise viewpoint. Arriving prepared makes the difference between a great shot and a forgettable one.
Overview
Sarangkot (1,590m) sits 45 minutes above Pokhara by road and delivers a panoramic view of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Dhaulagiri on clear mornings. The photography priority is being in position 20 minutes before official sunrise. Cloud builds from the south most mornings and can obscure peaks completely by 08:00.
The alpenglow phase β 10β15 minutes before sun clears the eastern horizon β produces the most saturated warm tones on the Annapurna faces. Recommended gear: a telephoto in the 200β400mm range captures the Annapurna face detail that defines Sarangkot's best images. A wider lens (24β35mm) captures the full panorama with Phewa Lake below when light permits. Bring a tripod β pre-dawn light requires exposures of 1/30sβ1/4s at base ISO.
Most visitors arrive from Pokhara Lakeside by taxi (NPR 800β1,200 one way, negotiate return pickup time) or walk the trail from Pokhara in approximately 2.5 hours.
