Romantic Day Trips from Kathmandu for Couples
The best day trips from Kathmandu for couples including Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Chandragiri.
Kathmandu sits within an hour or two of several excellent day trip destinations. Each offers a distinct character: hilltop mountain views, medieval urban heritage, quiet hill villages, or forested nature parks. All are accessible without complex logistics.
Nagarkot: Himalayan Sunrise and Hill Walking
Nagarkot is the classic Kathmandu day trip for couples seeking mountain views. The village sits at 2,175 metres on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, 32 kilometres from Thamel. The drive takes 1.5-2 hours.
On clear mornings (October-November and February-April are best), the view stretches from Dhaulagiri in the west to Everest in the east, a sweep of over 30 named peaks. The sunrise in particular is extraordinary: the peaks emerge from darkness, take on orange, then gold, then brilliant white as the sun rises.
For couples planning a sunrise visit, stay overnight in Nagarkot the previous night. Several boutique properties sit directly on the ridge with views from the room. Return to Kathmandu after a mid-morning breakfast.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Walking in Nagarkot is pleasant on the forest trails that connect the ridge to the lower valley. The Nagarkot to Changunarayan walking route (4-5 hours one way) passes through the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park forest and ends at one of the oldest Hindu temples in Nepal.
Bhaktapur: Medieval Newari City
Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of the three medieval kingdoms that divided the Kathmandu Valley. The old city is largely car-free within the heritage zone, and walking its brick-paved lanes feels like entering a living museum.
Key sites: The 55-Window Palace, Nyatapola Temple (the tallest pagoda in Nepal at 30 metres), Dattatreya Square with its paired stone lions, and the Pottery Square where craftspeople still shape clay on foot-powered wheels.
Entry fee for foreigners: NPR 1,800 per person. The fee goes toward heritage preservation and is well worth paying.
Bhaktapur is 13 kilometres east of Kathmandu and takes 45-60 minutes by taxi. The day trip is best started early (leave Kathmandu by 7:30 am) to have the heritage area before tour groups arrive at 9 am.
Bhaktapur is known for juju dhau (king curd), a thick yogurt made in clay pots that you should try before leaving.
Dhulikhel: Quiet Hill Town with Mountain Views
Dhulikhel lies 30 kilometres east of Kathmandu on the Araniko Highway. The town sits on a ridge at 1,550 metres with southward-facing views toward the lower hills and northward-facing views toward the Langtang and Jugal Himalayan ranges.
Dhulikhel has less of the intense tourist activity of Bhaktapur or Nagarkot. The old bazaar area has traditional architecture, the Chandeswari Temple on the eastern edge of town is a gentle walk, and the Namobuddha monastery (12 kilometres further) is one of the most sacred Tibetan Buddhist sites in Nepal outside of Boudha.
Chandragiri Hills by Cable Car
The Chandragiri Hills Cable Car on the southwestern rim of the Kathmandu Valley opened in 2016 and provides easy access to 2,551-metre hilltop views. The cable car ride takes 15 minutes and the summit has a park with gardens, a Balachatu temple, and a wide panoramic terrace.
On very clear days, Himalayan peaks are visible from the summit. More reliably, the view down over the entire Kathmandu Valley with its patchwork of buildings and green areas is excellent.
This is a relaxed day trip suitable for any level of fitness. The cable car base station is in Thankot, about 12 kilometres from Thamel.
Panauti: The Quiet Heritage Town
Panauti sits 32 kilometres southeast of Kathmandu at the confluence of the Roshi and Punyamati rivers. It lacks Bhaktapur's tourist infrastructure but retains a more authentic everyday atmosphere. The Indreshwar Mahadev Temple in the main square is one of the finest examples of Newari pagoda architecture in Nepal.
Panauti suits couples who want to experience Newari culture without the commercial layer of the more visited heritage towns.
