Nepal's rhododendron forests bloom from February at low altitude to May at treeline, creating sequential colour explosions across the hills. Here is where and when to photograph Nepal's national flower at its peak.

Nepal has over 30 rhododendron species, from the tree-sized Rhododendron arboreum (the red-flowered national flower) at 1,500–2,500m to dwarf alpine species at 4,000m. The bloom sequence follows altitude, giving photographers a two-month window from late February to late April to chase peak colour at different elevations.
Poon Hill (3,210m) and the Ghorepani area of the Annapurna region are the most celebrated rhododendron forest photography locations in Nepal. The trail from Ghorepani to Tadapani passes through one of the largest contiguous rhododendron forests in Asia — in April, the forest canopy at 2,800–3,200m is a continuous ceiling of red, pink, and white flowers.
Timing: the Poon Hill rhododendrons typically peak in the last week of March to first week of April at 3,000m altitude. Lower elevations (around Ulleri and Tikhedhunga) bloom two to three weeks earlier. Track current bloom conditions through lodge owners in Ghorepani who post regular updates.
Photography approach: forest canopy rhododendron shots require either a wide angle pointed upward at the flower ceiling or a telephoto pulling individual blossom clusters against blue sky or mountain backgrounds. Dawn light filtering into rhododendron forest is the most magical condition — arrive at Ghorepani the night before and walk the trail at 06:00.
