Renting a Bicycle in Nepal: Where to Hire, Routes, and Tips
A guide to bicycle rental in Nepal — where to hire, popular cycling routes, costs, and what kind of bike to choose.
Cycling is one of the most rewarding ways to explore Nepal's cities and countryside. Kathmandu valley offers a surprising variety of cycling routes, and Pokhara's Lakeside is bicycle-perfect. Here is everything you need to rent a bicycle and ride in Nepal.
Bicycle Rental in Kathmandu
Thamel has numerous bicycle rental shops. You will find everything from basic single-speed city bikes to mountain bikes with front suspension. For exploring within Kathmandu — Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath — a simple city bike is sufficient. For valley rides to Nagarkot, Pharping, or Dakshinkali, a mountain bike is preferable.
Costs in Kathmandu:
- Basic city bike: NPR 400–700 per day
- Mountain bike: NPR 700–1,500 per day
- High-quality Trek or Specialized MTB: NPR 2,000–4,000 per day
Bicycle Rental in Pokhara
Lakeside is especially bicycle-friendly. A flat lakeside road runs alongside Phewa Lake and connects the tourist strip with quieter neighbourhoods and viewpoints. Rental shops are plentiful along the main Lakeside strip.

Popular Cycling Routes
Kathmandu Valley
Boudhanath Circuit: Start from Thamel, ride east to Boudhanath Stupa — approximately 10 km each way. Moderate traffic in places but entirely doable on a city bike.
Kirtipur and Chobar Gorge: A 15–20 km loop through ancient Newari town Kirtipur and the Bagmati River gorge. Some hills but mostly manageable.
Nagarkot: A challenging 32 km uphill ride from Bhaktapur to Nagarkot, gaining around 800 metres of elevation. Rewarding at the top with Himalayan views. Many cyclists ride up and truck the bike back down.
Dakshinkali: A 22 km ride south from Kathmandu through forest and villages. Moderate terrain.
Pokhara
Phewa Lake Loop: Flat, scenic ride along the lake. About 10–12 km total. Suitable for all fitness levels.
Begnas Lake: A 14 km ride east from Pokhara city offers a quieter, more rural lake experience.
Sarangkot Road: Steep climb but rewarding views of the Annapurna range.
Multi-Day Cycling
The Annapurna Circuit by mountain bike is one of Nepal's classic adventure cycling routes — approximately 160–200 km with altitude up to 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass. Physically demanding, requires prior mountain biking experience and high-altitude acclimatisation.
Safety
Wear a helmet — many shops provide one but bring your own if quality matters. Ride defensively in city traffic. Kathmandu's roads have potholes and unpredictable traffic patterns. Follow local road rules and ride on the left.
Bikes in Lumbini
Lumbini is one of Nepal's best cycling destinations. The sacred garden and monastery complex are spread over a large flat area — a rental bike is the perfect way to explore. Bikes cost NPR 150–300 per day at the entrance area.
Cycling in Nepal gives you access to the countryside at a pace that lets you absorb the sights and sounds that pass by in a blur from a car window. It is affordable, healthy, and genuinely enjoyable even in hilly terrain.
