Poon Hill Sunrise Photo Guide: Nepal's Most Photographed Dawn
Poon Hill at 3,210 m draws hundreds of trekkers every dawn for its Annapurna panorama. This guide covers the precise techniques, positions, and seasonal conditions for outstanding photographs.
Overview
Poon Hill is Nepal's most popular dawn viewpoint and one of the most photographed locations in Asia. Every morning from October to April, 100 to 400 trekkers climb the 45-minute trail from Ghorepani in the pre-dawn dark to reach the hilltop observation tower for sunrise over the Annapurna Range. Despite (or because of) the crowds, it produces some of the most spectacular mountain photography in Nepal when conditions align.
Arriving Early
The observation tower at Poon Hill fills by 5:45 am in peak season. Arriving at 5:30 am is essential for a position at the tower railing with unobstructed views to the north and east. The tower itself is three storeys -- the top level gives a 360-degree view including Dhaulagiri behind you to the west. A headlamp and warm layers (temperature at the top in October and November is -5 to -8 degrees Celsius at 5 am) are essential.
The Photography Sequence
The pre-dawn blue hour begins 30 minutes before sunrise -- this is excellent for wide landscape shots with stars still visible above the peaks (use ISO 3200 to 6400, f/2.8, 15 to 25 second exposure). The alpenglow phase on Annapurna South and Himchuli begins 5 minutes before sunrise -- meter for the peaks at EV -1 to capture the orange-red colour without overexposure. After sunrise, shoot the rhododendron forest below with peaks above for a characteristic composition.
March and April Advantage
In March and April, rhododendrons around Ghorepani and on the Poon Hill slope below the tower bloom in brilliant red and pink. These flowering foregrounds with snow peaks above create Nepal's most technically complete mountain landscape images. The combination is worth planning a trip specifically for.

FAQ
Is there a fee to climb Poon Hill?
The observation platform at the top costs NPR 100 (collected at the base of the steps). The Ghorepani-Poon Hill area is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP permit required, NPR 3,000).
What is the success rate for clear views at Poon Hill?
October and November: 80 to 85 percent of mornings are clear. December and January: 70 to 75 percent (some fog in the valleys). March and April: 60 to 70 percent (increasing pre-monsoon haze). May and June: poor. Monsoon months: very poor.
Can I use a drone at Poon Hill?
Drones are generally not permitted inside the ACAP conservation area without a specific permit from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal and ACAP office. The cost and process are significant -- most photographers use standard telephoto lenses instead.
