Overview

Pokhara Regional Airport (IATA: PKR) opened its new international terminal in January 2023, replacing the old domestic-only Pokhara Airport. Located about 23 kilometers from Pokhara's lakeside tourist area, the new airport is one of the most modern in Nepal and serves as the second international gateway after Tribhuvan. It handles both international flights from select destinations and domestic routes to Kathmandu and mountain airstrips.

International Flights

As of 2025, international routes operating from Pokhara include connections to Guangzhou and other Chinese cities, select Indian cities, and some Southeast Asian destinations during high season. International operations remain limited compared to Kathmandu, but the route network is expanding. Check your airline's website for the latest routes as new services are added regularly.

Visa on Arrival at Pokhara Airport

Travelers arriving on international flights at Pokhara Regional Airport can obtain a visa on arrival at the immigration counter. The process and fees are identical to Tribhuvan Airport. Bring USD in cash and your passport photo. Pre-applying via e-visa is also accepted.

Domestic Operations

Domestic flights from Pokhara connect to Kathmandu (30-40 minutes) and mountain airstrips including Jomsom for the Mustang region and occasionally Manang for Annapurna Circuit trekkers. Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Shree Airlines operate regularly from Pokhara.

Getting to Lakeside

Taxis from the new airport to Lakeside Pokhara cost approximately NPR 1,500-2,000. The ride takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Some hotels arrange complimentary pickup — confirm before arrival. Local buses exist but are infrequent from the airport area.

FAQ

Q: Is the new Pokhara airport worth the extra cost of flying directly instead of Kathmandu?

If your primary destination is Pokhara or the Annapurna region, flying directly to Pokhara saves the 5-7 hour bus or taxi journey from Kathmandu. The route is becoming more competitive with more airlines adding service, so prices are improving.

Q: Are the airport facilities comparable to Tribhuvan?

Pokhara Regional Airport's new terminal is actually more modern and comfortable than Tribhuvan in many respects. It has better seating, cleaner facilities, functioning air conditioning, and a calmer atmosphere. ATMs, a duty-free shop, and a cafe are available.

Q: Can I reach Pokhara airport by public transport?

Limited public bus service runs between Pokhara bus park and the airport, but it is irregular. Most travelers use taxis or pre-arranged hotel pickups. Ride apps may also serve the route as app-based transport expands in Pokhara.
