Pokhara Old Bazaar: A Guide to the Historic Heart of the City

Discover Pokhara's Old Bazaar — the historic market district that predates the tourist era — with its Newari architecture, traditional trades, and authentic local atmosphere.

Overview

While Lakeside is Pokhara's tourist face, the Old Bazaar (Bazar Tole) is its historic soul. Centred around the area between Prithvi Chowk and Bhimsen Tole, this older commercial district predates the arrival of international tourism by several centuries and still functions as a working market for local residents. The architecture reflects Newari building traditions that arrived with traders from the Kathmandu Valley, characterised by tiered pagoda-style rooflines, carved wooden windows, and narrow multi-storey buildings arranged around inner courtyards.

What to See

Bhimsen Tole: The old market square anchored by a white tower-shrine to Bhimsen, the patron deity of traders. The square is ringed by traditional buildings and has a lively early-morning vegetable and grain market.

Newari Architecture: Walk slowly through the lanes radiating off Bhimsen Tole to observe the carved peacock windows, woodwork detailing, and traditional shopfronts that characterise Newari mercantile architecture.

Traditional Trades: The Old Bazaar remains home to goldsmiths, tailors, hardware merchants, grain dealers, and spice sellers who cater to locals. It is a working district, not a heritage museum.

Planning this trip? 🎒

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Bindyabasini Temple: A short walk north of the Old Bazaar, this hilltop temple dedicated to the goddess Bhagwati (Durga) is the oldest religious site in Pokhara city proper and worth a visit combined with a walk through the bazaar.

How to Get There

The Old Bazaar is about 3 kilometres north of Lakeside along the main Prithvi Narayan Highway. Taxis take about 10 minutes from Lakeside. Local microbuses running between Lakeside and the bus park pass through this area.

Tips for Visiting

Visit in the morning when the market is most active. The bazaar district is compact enough to explore on foot in 1-2 hours. Bring small denominations of cash — the traditional shops rarely accept card payments. Avoid photographing people without permission, particularly at religious sites.

FAQ

Q: Is the Old Bazaar touristy?

The Old Bazaar is primarily a local market and sees relatively few international tourists compared to Lakeside. This is part of its appeal — it offers a more authentic view of everyday Pokhara life.

Q: Are there food options in the Old Bazaar?

Yes. Local teahouses (chiya pasal) serve sweet milk tea, sel roti (Nepali ring doughnuts), and simple set meals. These are the authentic, inexpensive eating options that locals use, very different from the tourist-facing restaurants in Lakeside.
