Pokhara Lakeside Guesthouses: A Complete Guide
Lakeside in Pokhara is Nepal's most popular tourist strip. This guide covers what to look for in a lakeside guesthouse, which lanes offer the best value, and how to book during peak season.
Why Stay Lakeside?
Phewa Lake is the centrepiece of Pokhara, and staying within a short walk of its shore gives you the extraordinary experience of watching the Annapurna range reflect in the water at sunrise. The lakeside strip is also the easiest place in Nepal to organise trekking permits, rent equipment, find paragliding operators, and connect with other travellers.
The Main Lakeside Strip
The primary road running north from Baidam Chowk to the Barahi Temple landing is lined with guesthouses, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Properties on this road have the advantage of proximity to all services but face road noise and occasional traffic. Rooms on upper floors or those facing the lake command a premium but deliver genuine value in views.
The Lane Network
Behind and parallel to the main lakeside road, a network of quieter lanes contains many of Pokhara's best-value guesthouses. Family-run lodges in these lanes often charge NPR 1,200 to 2,500 for a clean double room with lake views from a rooftop terrace. These properties are typically a two to five minute walk from the main strip.
What to Look For
Lake view from the room or rooftop: Many guesthouses advertise lake views; verify whether this means from your actual window or only from the rooftop shared terrace.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Hot water reliability: Solar-heated hot water is unreliable during cloudy or rainy periods. Check whether the property has an electric backup heater.
Noise insulation: Rooms facing the main road receive generator and traffic noise. Internal rooms or upper floors facing the lake are preferable.
Breakfast quality: Many lakeside guesthouses offer breakfast. A fresh egg meal, toast, and tea sets you up well for a trek starting day.
Price Ranges
- Budget (NPR 700 to 1,800): Small rooms, often with shared bathroom; good for very short stays
- Mid-range (NPR 2,000 to 5,000): Private bathroom, consistent hot water, rooftop access, often excellent value
- Upper mid-range (NPR 5,500 to 12,000): Lake-facing rooms with balconies, better beds, more responsive staff
Booking Advice
October and November are peak months when lakeside guesthouses fill rapidly. Booking two to four nights in advance is advisable. Arriving without a booking in the first two weeks of October is a gamble. The rest of the year, walk-in rates are usually available and negotiation on price is normal.
FAQ
Can I rent a boat from my guesthouse?
Many lakeside guesthouses can arrange wooden rowing boats (NPR 400 to 600 per hour) or motorised boats to the Tal Barahi Island temple.
Is Lakeside good for families?
Yes. Lakeside is flat, safe to walk, and has plenty of child-friendly restaurants. The lake itself offers boat rides and swimming in the warmer months.
