Pokhara Cycling Guide: Routes, Rentals, and Tips

A guide to cycling in and around Pokhara — the best routes for all abilities, where to rent bikes, what the roads are like, and day-trip cycling destinations.

Overview

Pokhara is a surprisingly good cycling destination. The Pokhara valley is relatively flat compared to most of Nepal, the Phewa Lake perimeter offers gentle lakeside cycling, and a growing network of paved and unsealed roads connects the city with surrounding villages, viewpoints, and the second lake at Begnas. Bicycle rental is widely available and inexpensive, making this one of the cheapest ways to explore beyond Lakeside.

Bike Rental

Bicycle rental shops are concentrated along the main commercial street in Lakeside. Single-speed city bikes, basic mountain bikes, and occasionally higher-quality mountain bikes are available. Inspect brakes, tyres, and gears before accepting a bike. Helmets should be requested (not all shops include them; bring your own if you have one). Motorbike and scooter rentals are available for those who want engine-assisted range.

Routes

Phewa Lake Circuit (partial): The eastern shore of Phewa Lake is accessible by road and path. Cycling south from central Lakeside to Damside along the lake edge takes about 20 minutes. The western and southern shores are not directly accessible by bicycle — these require boat access.

Lakeside to Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave: Approximately 2.5 kilometres south of central Lakeside along the main road. A flat, easy ride. Combine with the International Mountain Museum, another kilometre further south, for a half-day cultural cycling circuit.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Lakeside to Sarangkot: This is a serious climb — Sarangkot sits 750 metres above Lakeside. The road is paved but steep. Mountain bike or e-bike strongly recommended. The descent is fast and scenic.

Lakeside to Begnas Lake: Approximately 15 kilometres east of central Pokhara along the road toward Lekhnath. Mostly flat with some gentle undulations. A straightforward 45-60 minute ride each way on a basic bike. One of the best cycling day trips in the valley.

Old Bazaar and Bindyabasini Temple Circuit: A 3-kilometre ride north from Lakeside along the main road to the Old Bazaar and Bindyabasini Temple. Mostly flat. Good for a 2-hour morning excursion.

Kaskikot Village: A longer ride from Sarangkot along the ridge toward Kaskikot offers spectacular views and a rural cultural experience. Best done on a mountain bike with mechanical confidence, as the road has variable surfaces.

Road Conditions

The main roads around Pokhara (Lakeside to Davis Falls, Lakeside to Old Bazaar, Lakeside to Begnas) are paved and in reasonable condition. Traffic is moderate but includes trucks and buses on the main arterial roads. Unpaved tracks into the surrounding hills become difficult after rain. Lakeside's internal lanes are generally quiet enough for easy cycling.

Mountain Biking

For technical mountain biking, trails in the hills surrounding Pokhara (toward Sarangkot, Kaskikot, and the Kahun Danda ridge) provide more challenging terrain. Some local operators organise guided mountain biking tours. Riding these trails without local knowledge of the route is possible but getting lost on unmarked tracks is a risk.

Safety Tips

Ride on the left (Nepal follows left-hand traffic rules). Be cautious on the main road where trucks and buses move quickly. Test brakes carefully on any downhill before committing to speed. Carry water, a basic pump if available, and your accommodation's address in Nepali in case you need to ask for directions.

FAQ

Q: Can I cycle around the entire Phewa Lake?

No. The lake's western and southern shores are forested or otherwise inaccessible by bicycle. The accessible eastern shore (Lakeside to Damside) is cyclable. Cross to the southern ghat by boat and hike to the World Peace Pagoda from there.

Q: Are e-bikes available in Pokhara?

A small number of rental shops have begun offering e-bikes. Availability varies; ask specifically when you visit the rental shops. E-bikes significantly expand the practical range for cycling tours in the hilly terrain around Sarangkot.
