Pokhara Airport Guide: Everything Travellers Need to Know
A complete guide to Pokhara Regional Airport (PKH) — domestic flights, the new international airport, facilities, and how to get to Lakeside.
Overview
Pokhara has two airports: the original Pokhara Regional Airport (IATA: PKH), which has served domestic routes for decades, and the newly constructed Pokhara International Airport (also designated PKH in planning communications), which was inaugurated in January 2023. The new international facility is located approximately 3 kilometres south of Lakeside and was built to handle larger aircraft and international routes.
Domestic Flights
Multiple Nepali carriers fly the Kathmandu-Pokhara route, with flight times of approximately 25-30 minutes. The domestic terminal is compact and easy to navigate. Check-in counters open around 90 minutes before departure; arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled flight. Baggage allowances vary by carrier — confirm when booking.
Mountain weather affects schedules. Delays and cancellations are more common in monsoon (June-September) and in winter months when valley fog can prevent morning operations at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport or at Pokhara itself.
The New International Airport
Pokhara International Airport was designed to receive flights from regional destinations in India, China, and Southeast Asia, as well as potentially serving as a diversion or alternate for Kathmandu on transatlantic routes. As of the time of writing, international operations have been slower to develop than initially projected, and most visitors still arrive via Kathmandu. Check current airline schedules for any direct international connections.

Facilities at the Airport
Both terminals have basic facilities — food and beverages, a small duty-free area, and ATM. The new international terminal has expanded waiting areas. WiFi is available inside.
Getting from the Airport to Lakeside
Taxi: The most convenient option. Taxis are available immediately outside the arrivals area. The journey to Lakeside takes about 10-15 minutes. Agree on the fare before departing — a prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal simplifies this.
Local microbus: Microbuses run between the airport area and the city centre at low cost. This requires some navigation and a willingness to use local transport. Not ideal with heavy luggage.
Getting to the Airport from Lakeside
Book a taxi through your accommodation the evening before an early flight. Taxis are available from the Lakeside promenade at all hours, but pre-booking for early morning flights provides reliability.
FAQ
Q: Is there a left-luggage facility at Pokhara Airport?
The airport has basic left-luggage services. Alternatively, most Lakeside guesthouses will store luggage for a small fee if you are departing on a late flight.
Q: Can I use Indian Rupees at the airport?
Nepali Rupees are the standard currency. Some shops and kiosks may accept Indian Rupees at an exchange rate; do not rely on this. Exchange at the airport ATM or counter on arrival.
