Overview

Pokhara is Nepal's adventure sports capital. The city's location at the base of the Annapurna Himalayan range and at the convergence of several river valleys creates ideal conditions for a remarkable range of outdoor activities. Most operators are based in Lakeside and offer booking, equipment, and transport to activity sites.

Paragliding

The headline activity. Sarangkot is one of the world's great paragliding sites. Tandem flights are available daily (weather permitting) from September through May. Cross-country flights and paragliding courses for those seeking to learn are also offered. See the dedicated paragliding guide for full details.

Trekking

The greatest adventure Pokhara offers is also its most accessible. The Annapurna Conservation Area contains world-class trekking routes of varying difficulty:

  • Poon Hill (3,210 m): 4-5 days round trip. Most popular short trek. Rhododendron forests, Gurung villages, mountain panorama from the viewpoint.
  • Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m): 7-12 days. Into the Annapurna Sanctuary.
  • Annapurna Circuit: Multi-week classic traverse of the entire massif.
  • Mardi Himal (4,500 m): A less-crowded alternative with spectacular high ridge walking.
  • Australian Camp / Dhampus: 1-2 day hikes accessible by road from Pokhara.

White Water Rafting

Several rivers accessible from Pokhara offer white water rafting:

Planning this trip? 🎒

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Seti River: Half-day rafting trip starting close to Pokhara. Calm to moderate rapids suitable for beginners and families.

Modi Khola: Half-day to full-day rafting with moderate rapids through the lower Annapurna foothills.

Kali Gandaki and Trishuli: Multi-day rafting expeditions for serious adventure seekers, often combined with end-to-end Annapurna Circuit treks.

Operators in Lakeside can book and arrange transport to all river put-in points.

Kayaking

Kayaking on Phewa Lake is available for independent paddlers. More serious river kayaking on the Seti and Modi rivers is offered by specialist operators. Paddling around the Phewa Lake shoreline is a relaxed option for those who want water experience without white water.

Zip-Lining

A zip-line operates from a launching platform on the ridge above Lakeside, providing high-speed descent with views of the lake. Duration is short but the aerial perspective is thrilling.

Ultra-Light Flying

Ultra-light aircraft (two-seat motorised planes) offer scenic flights over the Pokhara valley and Annapurna foothills. Flights vary from 20 minutes to over an hour and can approach closer to the mountain faces than paragliding on some routes.

Mountain Biking

Pokhara has a developing mountain biking scene. Rental shops in Lakeside stock basic to mid-range mountain bikes. Trail networks connect Lakeside to Sarangkot, the World Peace Pagoda, Kaskikot village, and the surrounding countryside.

Bungee Jumping

A bungee operation is available near Pokhara, suspended over a gorge. Check current operator status and equipment inspection records before booking.

Rock Climbing

Fixed climbing walls operate in Lakeside for indoor practice. Outdoor rock climbing on natural faces in the Pokhara area is available through specialist operators.

Safety Considerations

Nepal's adventure tourism sector has improved safety standards significantly over the past decade but still varies widely between operators. For all activities:

  • Verify operators hold current licenses from the relevant government authority (NCAA for aviation activities, relevant ministry for rafting, etc.)
  • Ask to see guide or pilot certifications
  • Do not book based on lowest price alone
  • Follow all equipment fitting instructions and safety briefings

FAQ

Q: What is the most popular adventure activity for first-time visitors?

Paragliding tandem flight. It is accessible to virtually everyone, requires no prior experience, lasts long enough to be a complete experience, and provides views unmatched by any other single activity in the area.

Q: Can I do multiple activities in one day?

Yes. A common combination is Sarangkot sunrise followed by a paragliding flight later the same morning, then a half-day rafting trip on the Seti in the afternoon. Operators can coordinate logistics.
