Pokhara 3-Day Itinerary: The Complete Plan
A day-by-day itinerary for spending three days in Pokhara — covering sunrise views, lake activities, cultural sites, adventure sports, and day trips.
Overview
Three days in Pokhara is enough to experience the city's main highlights — the lake and its temples, the best viewpoints, key cultural sites, and at least one adventure activity. The itinerary below is designed for a traveller arriving in Pokhara on Day 1 morning, departing on Day 3 evening.
Day 1: Arrival and Lakeside Orientation
Morning: Arrive and check in. Spend the first hour or two simply walking the Lakeside promenade to get your bearings. Have breakfast at one of the lakeside cafes and watch the morning light on the Annapurna range reflected in Phewa Lake.
Mid-morning: Rent a rowboat at one of the main ghats and row out to Barahi Temple island. Spend 20-30 minutes at the temple, then continue rowing across to the southern shore.
Afternoon: Begin the 20-30 minute walk up the forested path from the southern ghat to the World Peace Pagoda. The panorama of the lake and mountains from the pagoda terrace is one of Pokhara's finest views. Return by the boat you hired (wait at the southern ghat) or walk back to Damside and take a taxi to Lakeside.
Planning this trip? 🎒
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Evening: Walk the main commercial strip of Lakeside for shopping. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant. If a cultural show is scheduled at a nearby venue, consider attending.
Day 2: Sarangkot Sunrise and Cultural Sites
Pre-dawn: Wake at 4:30-5:00 am. Take a pre-arranged taxi to Sarangkot for sunrise. Arrive at the viewpoint at least 30 minutes before the sun clears the ridge. Watch the Annapurna peaks turn from grey to pink to gold. Have hot tea at one of the viewpoint tea shops.
Late morning: Either walk back to Lakeside on the trail from Sarangkot (1.5-2.5 hours, scenic) or return by taxi. Paragliding from Sarangkot can be added here if booked in advance — flights launch as thermals develop after sunrise.
Afternoon: Visit Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave, both on the same road south toward the airport. A taxi from Lakeside takes 10 minutes. Allow 1.5 hours for both sites. Afterwards, visit the International Mountain Museum nearby (30 minutes south of Lakeside). Allow 1.5-2 hours at the museum.
Evening: Try a Thakali set meal at one of the Old Bazaar restaurants. Walk back to Lakeside or take a taxi.
Day 3: Day Trip and Departure
Morning: Day trip to Begnas Lake (see the dedicated guide). Begnas is 15 kilometres east of Pokhara city centre. A local bus or taxi takes 30-40 minutes. Rent a boat, walk the lakeside trail, and have lunch at a local restaurant near the lake. A quieter, more rural alternative to Phewa Lake.
Afternoon: Return to Lakeside for any remaining shopping or errands. Visit the Old Bazaar if you have not done so — 1 hour of wandering through the traditional Newari market district is time well spent.
Evening: Departure — by tourist bus, public bus, or flight from Pokhara Airport. Pre-book your onward transport; tourist buses to Kathmandu sell out quickly during peak season.
Tips for This Itinerary
Book the Sarangkot taxi and paragliding in advance through your accommodation. The boat hire for Day 1 can be arranged at the ghats on the day. Check weather forecasts the evening before each outdoor activity to adjust plans as needed.
FAQ
Q: Can I fit all this in 3 days with a slow pace?
Yes, though Day 2 requires an early wake-up. Adjust Day 3 if you prefer more relaxed mornings — Begnas Lake is enjoyable at any time.
Q: What should I prioritise if time is short?
Sarangkot sunrise and the Phewa Lake boat trip to Barahi Temple are the experiences most unique to Pokhara. If you only have time for two activities, prioritise these two.
