Phakding Guesthouses: First Night on the Everest Trek

Phakding at 2,610 m is the first night stop for most trekkers on the Everest route, a 3-hour walk from Lukla. Its suspension bridges, river views, and cheerful teahouses make it a perfect first Sherpa village experience.

Overview

Phakding (2,610 m) sits on the west bank of the Dudh Koshi River, 8 km south of Namche Bazaar and 8 km north of Lukla. Most EBC trekkers arrive here after 3 to 4 hours of walking from Lukla, crossing several suspension bridges strung with prayer flags over dramatic gorges. The village has around 15 teahouses and is the first proper Sherpa village on the Everest route -- its stone houses, potato fields, and chortens (Buddhist shrines) introduce the Khumbu atmosphere.

Best Teahouses

Phakding Guest House is the most established property -- large rooms by Khumbu standards at NPR 700 to 1,200, reliable solar hot water, and the best dal bhat on the lower trail (NPR 700). The owner speaks excellent English and provides good trekking advice for the Namche section.

Himalayan Inn (river-view rooms) has the most scenic position -- rooms facing the Dudh Koshi River gorge at NPR 800 to 1,400. The morning light on the river at 7 am is spectacular.

Moonlight Lodge is a quiet family-run option at NPR 600 to 900. Simple but clean, with a warm common room and home-baked bread served at breakfast.

Suspension Bridges

The four suspension bridges between Lukla and Phakding are a highlight of the walk -- some span gorges over 100 metres deep. The bridges are decorated with Buddhist prayer flags and must be crossed one at a time to avoid dangerous oscillation. Yak and dzo (yak-cow hybrids) have right of way -- flatten yourself against the bridge rail to let them pass.

FAQ

Can I skip Phakding and walk directly to Namche Bazaar from Lukla?
Technically yes -- the Lukla to Namche Bazaar distance (18 km, 1,100 m ascent) is achievable in 6 to 7 hours for fit trekkers. However, sleeping at Phakding is an important first acclimatisation step. Do not rush the ascent in the first days.

Is there mobile phone coverage in Phakding?
Ncell and NTC both have coverage in Phakding. Data speeds are 3G to 4G depending on the provider. Wi-fi at teahouses costs NPR 100 to 200 per session.

What time do trekkers typically leave Phakding for Namche?
Most trekkers depart between 6:30 am and 8 am to avoid afternoon cloud build-up and to arrive in Namche before 1 pm. The 10-km walk with 700 m ascent takes 4 to 5 hours at a steady pace.
