Overview

Pokhara is one of the best paragliding destinations in the world and unquestionably the finest in Asia. The combination of reliable thermal lift from Phewa Lake, a consistent north-south ridge at Sarangkot, high Himalayan peaks as a backdrop, and a gentle landing zone on the lakeside meadow creates conditions that expert pilots consistently rate among the top globally. Thousands of flights take off each year, from beginner tandem trips to cross-country soaring expeditions by experienced pilots.

Tandem Paragliding

The vast majority of visitors do a tandem flight — you are harnessed in front of an experienced licensed pilot who controls the glider while you enjoy the experience. No prior experience is required. A standard tandem flight from Sarangkot to the landing zone at Paragliding Chowk takes roughly 20-30 minutes and gives you views of Phewa Lake, the Pokhara valley, and (on clear days) the Annapurna massif and Dhaulagiri. Longer flights, including sunrise flights and cross-country options, are also offered.

The Launch Site

The standard launch site is on the grassy slope below the Sarangkot viewpoint, at approximately 1,500 metres elevation. Pilots assess wind conditions before each launch. You will be fitted with a harness, given a brief safety briefing, and asked to run a few steps down the slope before the glider lifts you off the ground.

The Landing Zone

The landing area is a flat meadow near Phewa Lake's northeastern shore, a short walk from the main Lakeside promenade. Staff from paragliding companies are stationed there to assist with landing. After landing, operators typically provide a certificate and review flight footage if you purchased video service.

Choosing an Operator

The Nepal Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) licenses paragliding operators. Look for operators that display their NCAA license and whose pilots carry current certifications. Well-established companies with long track records and visible safety protocols are preferable to informal street-side touts. Ask to see the pilot's license before the flight. Reputable operators will insist on proper harness fitting and a safety briefing.

Solo and Training Flights

Pokhara is a recognised centre for paragliding courses ranging from introductory ground-handling training to full P1, P2, and P3 licensing. Several schools operate multi-day courses that take students through theory, ground handling, and solo flights from progressively higher launches. If you have your own paragliding license from another country, rental equipment and transport to local flying sites are available.

Season and Conditions

The flying season runs from September through May. October and November are peak months with stable thermals, light winds, and the clearest mountain views. December and January are cooler but flyable on most days. February through April brings building thermals as temperatures rise — experienced XC pilots particularly favour this period. June through August is monsoon; flying is suspended due to unsafe conditions.

FAQ

Q: Is tandem paragliding safe for people with no flying experience?

Yes. Tandem flights are specifically designed for passengers with no prior training. The pilot manages all aspects of the flight. Medical conditions affecting the heart, back, or neck should be disclosed to the operator in advance.

Q: What should I wear?

Comfortable, close-fitting clothing. Avoid scarves or loose items that could tangle. Wear closed-toe shoes with ankle support. Bring sunglasses.

Q: Can I bring my camera?

Handheld cameras and smartphones can be brought on a tandem flight. Secure them with a wrist strap. Many operators offer helmet-mounted GoPro footage for an additional charge.

Q: What happens if the weather is bad on my booked day?

Responsible operators will postpone flights if conditions are unsafe. Reputable companies allow rescheduling without penalty if they make the cancellation decision.
