Overland Solo Travel Nepal Borders: Crossing from India and Tibet

A practical guide to overland entry into Nepal for solo travelers, covering all active border crossings with India, the Tibet border situation, transport connections, and what to expect at each crossing.

Nepal is a landlocked country bordered by India to the east, west, and south and Tibet (China) to the north. Overland entry is a popular and cost-effective option for solo travelers incorporating Nepal into a longer South Asia or Silk Road journey. Understanding the specific logistics of each crossing point avoids the confusion and delay that catches unprepared travelers.

India-Nepal Border Crossings

Nepal's southern border with India has multiple crossing points, of which four are regularly used by international tourists:

Sunauli / Bhairahawa (Rupandehi District)
The most used tourist crossing, connecting Varanasi and Gorakhpur in India with Lumbini (the birthplace of the Buddha, 22km from Bhairahawa) and Pokhara (roughly 4 hours). The crossing is straightforward โ€” walk across the border on foot, obtain your Nepal visa at the Nepali immigration post, and catch a local bus or taxi to Bhairahawa's bus park for onward transport. Night crossings are technically possible but buses to Pokhara and Kathmandu are far more frequent in the morning.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Kakarbhitta / Panitanki (Jhapa District)
The eastern crossing point, connecting Darjeeling and Siliguri (West Bengal) with eastern Nepal. Popular with travelers doing the Nepal-Darjeeling circuit or those coming from Bangladesh via Kolkata. Buses to Kathmandu from Kakarbhitta take 10 to 12 hours. The crossing itself is quick but the onward bus journey is long โ€” overnight buses run but daytime is more comfortable.

Birgunj / Raxaul (Parsa District)
The main commercial crossing and one of the busiest borders in South Asia. Functionally operational for tourists but overwhelmed with freight traffic โ€” expect slower processing and a less comfortable crossing experience than Sunauli or Kakarbhitta. Useful if you are coming from Patna (Bihar) and heading to Kathmandu.

Mahendranagar / Banbasa (Kanchanpur District)
The far-western crossing, connecting Uttarakhand (India) with western Nepal. Used by travelers doing the Kailash Mansarovar circuit or far-western Nepal routes. Very limited tourist infrastructure on both sides โ€” advance planning required.

What to Carry at Land Borders

  • Valid passport with sufficient blank pages for visa stamp
  • USD cash for visa fee (USD 25/40/100 for 15/30/90 days)
  • Two passport photos (photo machines available at most crossings but not guaranteed)
  • Onward travel documentation is not required but can help with any immigration queries

Tibet Border (Rasuwagadhi / Kerung)

The Tibet crossing reopened in 2017 after being closed following the 2015 earthquake (the old Friendship Bridge at Tatopani/Zhangmu was destroyed). The current crossing at Rasuwagadhi in Rasuwa District operates for overland travelers with valid Chinese visas and Tibet Travel Permits.

Solo travelers cannot enter Tibet independently โ€” Chinese regulations require all Tibet-bound travelers to book through a licensed Tibet Tourism Bureau agency, which provides a mandatory guide. The logistics of arranging permits in Kathmandu typically require 5 to 7 business days. Several Kathmandu-based agencies specialize in Tibet entry: Himalayan Glacier Trekking and Potala Tours are established operators.

General Overland Tips

  • Nepal visa on arrival is available at all official border crossings
  • Keep USD cash for the visa fee โ€” NPR and INR are not accepted for visa payment
  • Border crossing hours for immigration processing are typically 7 AM to 7 PM on both sides
  • The first towns on the Nepal side of all major crossings have ATMs and moneychangers
