Nepal With Kids: Complete Guide

Everything families need to know before traveling to Nepal with children, from visa requirements to must-see destinations and practical packing tips.

๐Ÿ“… November 8, 2025๐Ÿ‘ค Bikram Rai

Nepal is one of the most rewarding family travel destinations in Asia. The country offers snow-capped peaks, jungle wildlife, ancient temples, and warm hospitality that children find genuinely captivating. With the right preparation, a trip to Nepal with kids can be smooth, memorable, and safe.

Visa and Entry

Children of all ages require a tourist visa to enter Nepal (except Indian nationals). Visas are available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at several land border crossings. You will need a passport-sized photo for each child. As of 2024, a 15-day tourist visa costs USD 30, a 30-day visa costs USD 50, and a 90-day visa costs USD 125. Children under 10 years old are exempt from the visa fee.

Best Time to Visit With Kids

October and November are ideal months for families. Skies are clear, temperatures are moderate, and the major festivals of Dashain and Tihar fall during this window. March and April offer similar conditions with spring flowers on the hillsides. Avoid June through August for active trekking, as monsoon rains make trails slippery and leeches are common in forested areas. However, the monsoon season is not entirely off-limits -- Pokhara remains beautiful, Chitwan is excellent, and indoor cultural activities in Kathmandu work well regardless of rain.

Top Family Destinations

Kathmandu provides an urban base with world heritage sites, museums, and a wide range of accommodation and dining. Pokhara is relaxed, lakeside, and has gentle boat rides, paragliding viewpoints for older teens, and easy walking trails. Chitwan National Park is a highlight for children of any age -- jeep safaris, canoe rides, and the chance to see rhinos and elephants up close are genuinely thrilling. Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, offers a serene, well-maintained complex of monasteries and gardens that teaches children about history and world religions in a living setting.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Getting Around

Domestic flights connect Kathmandu to Pokhara (25 minutes), Chitwan/Bharatpur (20 minutes), and Bhairahawa near Lumbini (40 minutes). Flights are affordable and save considerable road travel time. Taxis in Kathmandu are metered and generally safe. Tourist buses between major cities are comfortable and an affordable option for families on a budget.

Packing Essentials for Kids

  • High-SPF sunscreen (UV is intense at altitude)
  • Insect repellent with DEET for Chitwan and Lumbini
  • Oral rehydration salts
  • A child-specific first aid kit
  • Comfortable walking shoes and light waterproof layers
  • Any prescription medication your child uses regularly (supply may not be available locally)
  • Small backpacks for children to carry their own snacks and water

Food

Nepali food is generally mild and child-friendly. Dal bhat (lentils with rice) is nutritious and available everywhere. Most restaurants in tourist areas offer pasta, noodles, pizza, and sandwiches alongside local dishes. Bottled water is widely available -- always drink bottled or filtered water.

Health Precautions

Consult a travel medicine specialist at least four to six weeks before departure. Standard recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and routine childhood immunizations. Altitude sickness is a concern above 2,500 meters -- children are not immune and should be watched carefully if trekking to higher elevations. Stick to lower-altitude destinations like Nagarkot (2,175 m) for overnight trips if children are young.

Nepal genuinely embraces families. Local people adore children, and you will find that having kids with you opens doors to genuine interactions and hospitality that independent adult travelers sometimes miss.
