Nepal Weather by Month: Complete Guide

Nepal has four distinct seasons that dramatically affect trekking, sightseeing, and travel conditions. Here is what to expect from January through December.

Overview

Nepal s climate is shaped by altitude and the South Asian monsoon. The country ranges from tropical lowlands to arctic mountain peaks, so weather varies dramatically by elevation. For most travellers, the key question is whether trekking and sightseeing conditions will be good.

The two best seasons are autumn (October-November) and spring (March-April-May). Monsoon (June-September) brings heavy rain and cloud cover. Winter (December-February) is cold but clear.

Key Tips

October-November: The best trekking season. Clear skies, stable weather, excellent mountain views. Trails are busy but for good reason. Book accommodation in advance.

March-May: Second-best season. Rhododendrons bloom in April, adding spectacular colour to trails. Temperatures are warming up. Slightly less crowded than autumn.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

June-September: Monsoon season. Leeches on trails, cloud cover obscuring mountains, and landslide risk on mountain roads. Not recommended for trekking, but green landscapes are beautiful for photography.

December-February: Cold but clear. High passes may be snowed in but lower elevation treks like Poon Hill are manageable. Kathmandu sightseeing is excellent in winter.

FAQ

When is the worst time to visit Nepal?
July and August are the peak monsoon months โ€” expect daily rain, leeches on trails, and poor visibility of mountains. Some travellers enjoy the lush green scenery and fewer crowds.

Can I trek Everest Base Camp in winter?
Yes, but it is very cold โ€” temperatures at Base Camp can drop below -20ยฐC at night. The trail is much less crowded. Experienced winter trekkers with proper gear make this journey successfully.

Does Kathmandu have a monsoon season?
Yes, Kathmandu receives significant rainfall from June to September. Sightseeing is still possible between showers, and cultural sites remain open. Flights may be delayed due to poor visibility.
