Indians Traveling to Nepal: Visa-Free Entry Explained

Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter Nepal — but there are important rules about which documents are accepted at the border.

Overview

India and Nepal share an open border under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, meaning Indian citizens can enter Nepal without a visa and stay indefinitely for most purposes including tourism and employment. However, this does not mean entering Nepal is entirely document-free. Knowing exactly what to carry prevents unnecessary hassle at the border.

Accepted Identity Documents

Indian citizens can enter Nepal with a valid Indian passport (any validity), an Election Commission Voter ID card, a PAN card, an Aadhaar card (accepted at most land borders and increasingly at the airport), or a Ration card with photo. Note that driving licenses are NOT accepted as valid entry documents. Children traveling alone or with non-parent guardians must carry additional documentation such as a birth certificate and parental consent letter.

Air vs Land Entry

At Tribhuvan International Airport, Indian passport holders proceed to the foreign nationals queue but are processed quickly. Airlines may require a valid passport for boarding, so check airline policy before flying. At land borders, Indian Voter ID and Aadhaar are commonly accepted but exact requirements vary by checkpoint and officer discretion.

Working and Living in Nepal

Indians can work in Nepal without a work permit, own land (with restrictions), and access most public services. Long-term residents typically register with local ward offices. There is no cap on the length of stay for Indian nationals.

FAQ

Q: Can Indian travelers use Nepal currency freely?

Indian rupees are widely accepted in Nepal, particularly in border towns and Kathmandu. The official exchange rate is fixed at NPR 1.60 per INR 1. Large Indian denomination notes (INR 2,000, INR 500 post-demonetization) have had restrictions in the past — verify current acceptance status before travel.

Q: Do Indian nationals need any special permits for trekking?

Yes. Indian nationals still need to purchase TIMS cards and all applicable national park and conservation area permits for trekking, identical to any other foreign national. The visa-free status does not exempt you from trekking permits.

Q: Is there a separate immigration queue for Indians at TIA?

There is no dedicated Indian-only queue, but the process for Indian nationals is faster since no visa fees are collected. Bring all documents in hand to speed things up.
