TIMS Card for Nepal Trekking: What It Is and How to Get One
The Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card is required for most Nepal treks and takes just minutes to obtain.
Overview
The Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card is a mandatory registration document for trekkers in most areas of Nepal. It records your trekking itinerary and emergency contacts to assist in search and rescue operations. Individual trekkers pay NPR 2,000 (approximately USD 15) and those trekking through registered agencies pay NPR 1,000. Cards are issued by the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) offices in Kathmandu (Maligaon) and Pokhara (Damside), or through licensed trekking agencies. You need a passport photo, a photocopy of your passport and visa, and details of your planned route and local emergency contact.
FAQ
Q: Do I need a TIMS card if I have an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)?
Yes. The TIMS card and area permits are separate. You need both the TIMS card and any applicable conservation area or national park permit for your specific trekking region. They serve different purposes.
Q: What happens if I trek without a TIMS card?
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Checkpoints along popular trekking routes verify TIMS cards. Trekking without one can result in a fine and being turned back. In the event of an emergency, lack of registration also complicates search and rescue coordination.
