Overview

The Nepal-Tibet border crossing at Rasuwagadhi (Nepal side) and Kerung (Tibet/China side) is the main operational crossing point for tourists in 2026. The historic Kodari/Zhangmu crossing remains closed following the 2015 earthquake damage.

Entering Tibet from Nepal requires a Chinese tourist visa AND a Tibet Travel Permit, both of which must be arranged through a licensed Chinese tour operator before arrival at the border. Independent travel to Tibet is not permitted.

Key Tips

Start your Tibet permit process at least 3 to 4 months in advance. Contact a licensed Tibetan tour operator in China who can apply for the Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf. The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu does not issue Tibet Travel Permits directly.

The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issues Chinese visas to Nepal residents and some passport holders. Tourist visas from other countries can sometimes be used, but rules change โ€” verify current policy.

FAQ

Can I enter Tibet independently without a tour?
No โ€” all tourists entering Tibet must have a Tibet Travel Permit obtained through a licensed tour operator, and must travel with a designated guide while in Tibet. Independent travel is strictly prohibited.

Is the Kodari/Zhangmu crossing open?
As of 2026, the Kodari-Zhangmu crossing remains closed for general tourist traffic following extensive earthquake damage in 2015. Rasuwagadhi-Kerung is the main functioning border.

How long does it take to get a Tibet Travel Permit?
Processing typically takes 3 to 4 weeks. Start early, especially for travel during peak periods (Golden Week holidays in China and summer months).
