Nepal Spring With Family: Rhododendrons, Clear Skies, and Perfect Temperatures

March and April are among Nepal's finest months for family travel. Spring brings rhododendron blooms, crystal-clear mountain views, and ideal trekking temperatures.

Spring in Nepal -- spanning March, April, and early May -- is one of the two optimal travel seasons (alongside autumn). For families, spring has specific advantages that make it particularly appealing: school holidays often align, rhododendron forests provide spectacular visual drama, and temperatures across all elevations are comfortable without the heat of summer or the cold of winter.

Why Spring Suits Families

March temperatures in Kathmandu average 22-25 degrees Celsius during the day, dropping to 10-12 degrees Celsius at night -- comfortable for active sightseeing without requiring heavy clothing. By April, daytime temperatures in Kathmandu reach 25-28 degrees Celsius. At trekking elevations of 2,000-3,000 meters, March is brisk (0-15 degrees Celsius) but ideal for physical activity. The Terai (Chitwan, Lumbini) is warm and dry -- 30-35 degrees Celsius in March rising toward 38-40 degrees Celsius by May, making Chitwan best visited earlier in the spring season.

Rhododendron Season

Nepal is home to more than 30 species of rhododendron -- it is the national flower. At elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 meters, rhododendron forests bloom in vivid red, pink, and white from late February through April. The most spectacular displays are on:

  • The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek: The trail passes through dense rhododendron forests between Tikhedhunga and Ghorepani. In late March and early April, the path is lined with flowering trees -- one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in Asia
  • The Langtang Valley: Spring rhododendron blooms frame views of Langtang Lirung
  • Nagarkot and Dhulikhel: Day trips from Kathmandu through rhododendron-lined roads on the valley rim

Pointing out that Nepal's national flower is blooming overhead as you walk through it gives children a concrete connection to the country's identity.

Mountain Climbing Season

April is Nepal's primary mountaineering season. Families staying in Kathmandu during April may see expedition teams in the city, follow summit news on Everest and other peaks, and even arrange a flight over the Himalaya (Mountain Flight from Kathmandu, 1 hour, operated daily by several airlines) for a panoramic introduction to the high peaks.

Spring Festivals

Holi (February-March): The Festival of Colors, celebrated on the full moon of Phalguna. In Kathmandu, Holi is celebrated one day before the Indian Holi. Participants throw colored powder and water on each other in public squares. Children almost universally love Holi -- it is tactile, joyful, and community-building. Wear old white clothing and embrace the mess.

Losar (February-March, Tibetan New Year): Celebrated by Tibetan and Sherpa communities, particularly around Boudhanath. Vibrant monastery rituals, traditional food, and community gatherings.

Bisket Jatra (April, Bhaktapur New Year): One of the most dramatic festivals in the Kathmandu Valley, featuring a chariot procession and the raising of a ceremonial pole in Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The energy of the crowd and the scale of the chariot impress children and adults equally.

Spring Packing List

  • Light layers that can be added or removed as altitude and temperature change
  • Sun hat and high-SPF sunscreen (spring sun at altitude is strong)
  • Rain jacket (pre-monsoon showers can occur from late April)
  • Warm layer for evenings above 2,000 m
  • Good walking shoes or light trekking boots
