Nepal Spring Trekking Season Guide (March–May)
Everything you need to know about trekking in Nepal during spring — trail conditions, rhododendron blooms, temperatures, and which routes shine brightest.
Overview
Spring is Nepal's second trekking peak season, running from March through May. Warming temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and improving trail access after winter make spring one of the most visually dramatic times to walk in the Himalayas. It is also the primary climbing window for Everest expeditions, with the mountain's South Col route busy from late April through late May.
Weather During Spring
March starts cool, especially above 3,000 m, with night temperatures dropping below freezing on most mountain trails. By April, daytime temperatures are comfortable from Kathmandu (22–28°C) all the way up to Namche Bazaar (10–15°C at midday). May brings warmth to lower elevations but also the first signs of pre-monsoon instability — afternoon clouds build from midday, and occasional showers can obscure views by 2–3 pm.
Morning clarity is the rule rather than the exception in March and April. This makes early starts essential for photographers and anyone wanting unobstructed mountain panoramas.
Rhododendron Blooms
Nepal has 32 species of rhododendron, the national flower. The bloom sequence moves upward with the warming season. Lower forests (1,800–2,500 m) peak in early March, mid-elevation forests (2,500–3,500 m) peak in late March and April, and the highest species near the treeline bloom in May. The Annapurna foothills, Langtang, and trails around Ghorepani are famous for their rhododendron forests in full color.

Best Routes for Spring
Annapurna Circuit and Poon Hill: The forests between Ulleri and Ghorepani are carpeted with red, pink, and white rhododendrons in late March. The Thorong La pass (5,416 m) is open and passable in April and May.
Everest Base Camp: April and May are peak season. Trails from Lukla to Base Camp are at their busiest. Book lodges well in advance.
Langtang Valley: Quieter than Everest or Annapurna, with excellent rhododendron forests and reliable spring weather.
Manaslu Circuit: The Larkya La pass (5,106 m) is typically clear by mid-April. Fewer trekkers than Annapurna make this an appealing alternative.
Practical Tips
Carry layers. Mornings and evenings remain cold even in May at altitude. Sunscreen is essential — UV radiation at high altitude is severe, and spring sunshine can burn exposed skin quickly. Book flights to Lukla and accommodation in Namche, Dingboche, and Thorong Phedi early if traveling in April, as demand peaks sharply.
FAQ
Q: Is spring better than autumn for trekking?
Autumn (October–November) has marginally clearer skies and drier trails. Spring offers better wildflower displays and green landscapes but slightly more afternoon cloud buildup by May. Both are excellent; spring gives a more colorful visual experience while autumn gives crisper mountain views.
Q: Are leeches a problem in spring?
Leeches become active with the first rains, which start in earnest in June. In dry March and April, leeches are not an issue. May can bring early showers to lower elevations, where leeches may appear on muddy trails below 2,000 m.
