Nepal Road Trip: Planning Your Route
A Nepal road trip is one of the continent's great drives -- mountain passes, gorge roads, temple towns, and wildlife parks all within one two-week loop.
Nepal's road network is still developing but the core highways link all major destinations with passable roads year-round. A two-week loop from Kathmandu hits the country's highlights without retracing any significant distance.
The Classic Two-Week Loop
Start in Kathmandu. Drive west on the Prithvi Highway to Pokhara (200km, 5 to 6 hours). Spend 2 nights at Phewa Lake. Continue south on the Siddhartha Highway to Butwal and east to Lumbini (150km, 4 hours). Two days at the pilgrimage site. Drive east through the Terai on the Mahendra Highway to Chitwan (130km, 3 hours). Two nights of jungle safari. Head northeast toward Hetauda and back into the hills via the BP Highway -- the most dramatic road in Nepal (120km, 5 to 7 hours). Descend through Bhaktapur into Kathmandu valley. Total: roughly 700km of driving over 12 to 14 days.
Road Conditions by Route
The Prithvi Highway is Nepal's best-maintained highway -- generally good tarmac with ongoing upgrades. The Siddhartha Highway has rough sections south of Waling. The Mahendra Highway (East-West) in the Terai is fast and flat with occasional cattle crossings. The BP Highway through Sindhuli is winding and steep with incredible scenery -- not for nervous drivers.
Fuel and Breakdowns
Petrol stations exist in all towns and many highway junctions. Carry an extra 10-litre jerry can on remote mountain roads. For breakdowns, local mechanics are found in every bazaar town and are resourceful with limited parts. Emergency towing is not formalised outside major cities.

Vehicle Choice
A 4WD is strongly recommended. Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar are popular rentals. For Terai-only routes a 2WD sedan works. Kathmandu car rentals with driver cost NPR 5,000 to NPR 8,000 per day all-inclusive; self-drive car rentals for foreigners are available but require an IDP.
