Nepal Restricted Area Permits: Mustang, Dolpo, Manaslu and More
Some of Nepal's most dramatic landscapes require special restricted area permits obtainable only through registered agencies.
Overview
Nepal designates certain remote and culturally sensitive regions as restricted areas requiring a special permit in addition to the standard TIMS card and national park permits. These areas include Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Manaslu Circuit, Tsum Valley, Humla, Mugu, Limi Valley, and Nar-Phu Valley. The restricted area permit (RAP) costs between USD 50 and USD 500 per person per week depending on the region, and can only be obtained through a government-registered trekking agency โ individual trekkers cannot apply directly. A minimum group size of two trekkers is also required. The rationale is environmental protection and preservation of local culture in these fragile communities.
FAQ
Q: How far in advance do I need to apply for a restricted area permit?
Plan at least four to six weeks ahead. The permit application goes through your trekking agency and the Department of Immigration, and processing can take 7-14 working days. During busy trekking seasons, allow more time.
Q: Is Upper Mustang worth the high permit cost?
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Most trekkers who complete the Upper Mustang circuit say the Lo Manthang walled city, dramatic desert landscapes, and ancient cave monasteries justify every dollar. The high permit cost also limits crowds, making the experience far more intimate than popular routes like Annapurna or Everest Base Camp.
