Nepal designates certain remote and culturally sensitive regions as restricted areas requiring a special permit in addition to the standard TIMS card and national park permits. These areas include Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Manaslu Circuit, Tsum Valley, Humla, Mugu, Limi Valley, and Nar-Phu Valley. The restricted area permit (RAP) costs between USD 50 and USD 500 per person per week depending on the region, and can only be obtained through a government-registered trekking agency — individual trekkers cannot apply directly. A minimum group size of two trekkers is also required. The rationale is environmental protection and preservation of local culture in these fragile communities.
