Nepal Mountain Flights: Lukla, Jomsom, and Beyond

A guide to Nepal's dramatic mountain airstrip flights — the Lukla flight for Everest, Jomsom for Mustang, and what makes these journeys unforgettable.

📅 April 6, 2026👤 Anil Shrestha

Nepal is home to some of the most dramatic short-haul flights in the world. The combination of high altitude, short runways, and spectacular mountain scenery makes mountain airstrip flying a category unto itself. Here is what you need to know.

Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla (VNLK)

Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region and the Khumbu. The airport sits at 2,860 metres (9,383 feet) above sea level and is famous for its 527-metre runway with a steep uphill gradient — aircraft land uphill and take off downhill over a 600-metre cliff face. In 2010, the Airports Council International called it one of the most challenging airports in the world.

The Lukla Flight

  • Route: Kathmandu (Tribhuvan) to Lukla
  • Distance: approximately 135 km
  • Flight time: 35–40 minutes
  • Aircraft: Tara Air and Summit Air operate Twin Otter and Pilatus PC-12 aircraft on this route
  • Fare: USD 200–320 one-way (higher during peak season)
  • Departure: Flights typically depart in the early morning to take advantage of stable weather. Operations cease by midday in many cases.
  • Cancellations: Extremely common. Cloud coverage, wind, and visibility below minimums all cause cancellations. Build 1–2 extra days into your schedule.

Alternative if Lukla is Cancelled

  • Helicopter charters from Kathmandu to Lukla or Phakding cost USD 400–600 per person (shared) and can operate in weather conditions that ground fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Some trekkers take a jeep to Salleri or Phaplu and walk to Lukla or into Khumbu directly, adding 2–3 days.

Jomsom Airport (VNJS), Mustang

Jomsom is the main entry point to Upper Mustang and the Annapurna Circuit (northern section). The airport sits at 2,720 metres in the Kali Gandaki valley — the world's deepest gorge.

The Jomsom Flight

  • Route: Pokhara to Jomsom
  • Distance: approximately 60 km
  • Flight time: 20 minutes
  • Aircraft: Twin Otter
  • Fare: USD 130–200 one-way
  • Conditions: Strong afternoon winds in the Kali Gandaki valley mean all flights operate before 10–11 AM. Weather cancellations are frequent.

Ramechhap Manthali Airport: The Alternative Lukla Gateway

During peak trekking seasons (typically March–May and October–November), Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu becomes congested. The Nepal government and airlines shift Lukla flights to Manthali Airport (VNRK) in Ramechhap district, approximately 130 km east of Kathmandu. Getting to Manthali requires a pre-dawn taxi or bus departure from Kathmandu (3–4 hours by road). Check your airline's policy each season.

Other Notable Mountain Airstrips

  • Phaplu (VNPL): Alternative Everest region entry, at 2,413 m
  • Rara (VNRR): Gateway to Rara National Park, Humla, at 2,827 m
  • Simikot (VNST): Gateway to Humla and Kailash Mansarovar route, at 2,964 m
  • Dolpa (VNDP): Remote western Nepal, at 2,520 m

Safety

Nepal's mountain aviation has a mixed safety record. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) regulates all operators, but the inherent challenges of high-altitude, weather-dependent operations mean risk is higher than conventional aviation. Choose reputable, established carriers. Check current operator safety status before booking.

Tips for Mountain Flights

  • Book early — Lukla especially fills up months ahead in October and November.
  • Stay flexible with your schedule. Missing a mountain flight due to weather is extremely common.
  • Keep hand luggage light — weight limits are strictly enforced.
  • Fly in the morning. Afternoon mountain weather deteriorates rapidly.

These flights are not just transport — they are an experience in themselves, delivering you to some of the world's most extraordinary places in under an hour.
