Nepal Local Bus Travel Guide: The Cheapest Way to Get Between Cities
Local buses are Nepal's cheapest intercity transport. This guide covers how the system works, where to catch buses, what to expect on board, and how to make the journey more comfortable.
Nepal's local bus network is extensive, affordable, and the transport mode of choice for the vast majority of Nepali travelers. For budget travelers willing to accept a degree of chaos and discomfort, local buses offer savings of 50-70% compared to tourist buses.
The Bus Park System
Every major city and district headquarters has a central bus park (or separate parks for different directions). In Kathmandu, the main long-distance hub is Gongabu Bus Park (also called Naya Bus Park) in the north of the city. Ratna Park Bus Stand serves shorter routes. Buses depart throughout the morning, with most long-distance routes leaving between 5 am and 9 am.
How to Buy a Ticket
For local buses, you can buy tickets at the bus park ticket offices or directly from the conductor on the bus. Tickets are cheap โ show up, state your destination, pay the fare, and find a seat. There is no advance booking system for most local bus routes.
What to Expect on Board
Local buses in Nepal are a full sensory experience. They are often packed beyond apparent capacity, with passengers on the roof on some rural routes. Luggage is piled high on top and in aisles. Buses stop frequently to pick up and drop off passengers at any roadside flagging point. Journey times are estimates rather than promises โ road conditions, mechanical stops, and unpredictable traffic all affect actual travel time.

Tips for Making It Tolerable
- Sit near the front or in the middle to reduce sway on mountain roads.
- Bring snacks and water โ bus stops at dhabas (roadside restaurants) are brief.
- Motion sickness medication is worth taking if you are prone; mountain roads involve constant curves.
- Arrive 30-45 minutes before departure to secure a seat rather than standing.
- Keep valuables in a bag you hold rather than in luggage stored overhead or on the roof.
Overnight Buses
Many routes offer overnight sleeper buses (night buses) which save accommodation costs. See the separate overnight bus guide for details.
