Staying connected in Nepal is easier than you might think. Here is what to expect for Wi-Fi, mobile data, and internet access across the country.

Overview

Internet connectivity in Nepal has improved dramatically in recent years. Kathmandu and Pokhara have fast 4G mobile data and widespread Wi-Fi. On major trekking routes, connectivity becomes patchy above 3,500 meters and essentially nonexistent in the most remote regions.

For most travellers, an Ncell or NTC SIM with a data pack is the most reliable and affordable way to stay connected throughout the country.

Key Tips

In Kathmandu, most cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses offer free Wi-Fi. Speed is generally adequate for video calls and streaming. The Thamel area is particularly well-connected.

For trekking, Ncell data works reasonably well on the lower sections of major routes like Annapurna and Langtang. Above Namche Bazaar on the Everest trail, connectivity weakens but Everest Link Wi-Fi cards are available for purchase at tea houses.

FAQ

Is there Wi-Fi at Everest Base Camp?
Yes, paid Wi-Fi via Everest Link cards is available at many teahouses up to Base Camp. Speed is slow and cards are expensive (around NPR 1,500 for limited data), but it works for messaging and email.

Can I make video calls from Nepal?
Yes, video calls over WhatsApp, Zoom, and FaceTime work fine in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Connection quality drops on trekking trails. VoIP calls are unrestricted in Nepal.

Is there a VPN restriction in Nepal?
There are no official VPN restrictions in Nepal. Travellers routinely use VPNs without issue. Some websites and social platforms may occasionally be temporarily restricted by the government during politically sensitive periods.
