Overview

Nepal and India share an open border under the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, meaning citizens of both countries can cross freely without a visa. For third-country nationals, a Nepal visa on arrival is obtained at the border immigration post on the Nepal side.

The four main border crossings for tourists are Sunauli/Bhairahawa, Raxaul/Birgunj, Kakarbhitta/Panitanki, and Mahendranagar/Banbasa.

Key Tips

Sunauli/Bhairahawa is the most popular crossing for tourists coming from Varanasi or Gorakhpur. It is well-organised with clear signage. The border town of Bhairahawa on the Nepal side has good hotels if you need to overnight before continuing to Pokhara or Kathmandu.

Raxaul/Birgunj is the largest commercial crossing and sees heavy truck traffic. It can be chaotic. The immigration procedures are the same but the environment is busier and less tourist-friendly.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Kakarbhitta in eastern Nepal is the crossing point for travellers coming from Darjeeling, Sikkim, or the northeast of India. From Kakarbhitta, overnight buses reach Kathmandu in 12 to 15 hours.

FAQ

Do I need a permit to cross the Nepal-India border?
Third-country nationals need a Nepal visa (obtained on arrival at the border) but no special permit to cross. Indian nationals need only a valid ID. No separate permit is required for the border crossing itself.

How do I get from the India border to Kathmandu?
Overnight tourist buses run from all major border towns to Kathmandu. Prices range from INR 600 to INR 1,500 depending on the crossing. Alternatively, fly from Bhairahawa Airport (Gautam Buddha International Airport) โ€” a 25-minute flight to Kathmandu.

Is it safe to travel by bus from the border to Kathmandu at night?
Major tourist buses on established routes are generally safe. Avoid extremely cheap local buses on overnight routes. Reputable bus companies offer reclining seats and air conditioning on night buses from border towns.
