Whether you are renting a motorbike, hiring a private vehicle, or travelling in your own transport through Nepal, understanding the fuel network is essential — particularly once you leave the main highways.

Fuel Types Available in Nepal

Nepal's fuel supply is managed primarily by Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), a government entity. The main fuel types available are:

• Petrol (Gasoline): Available nationwide. Most petrol in Nepal is 91-octane regular petrol. Higher-octane fuel is less widely available outside Kathmandu.
• Diesel: Widely available. Most trucks, buses, and many SUVs in Nepal run on diesel.
• CNG (Compressed Natural Gas): Available at some stations in Kathmandu valley, used by some three-wheelers and newer vehicles.

Petrol Prices in Nepal

Petrol prices in Nepal are set by the Nepal Oil Corporation and updated periodically. As of 2024, petrol costs approximately NPR 180–200 per litre, and diesel costs NPR 160–185 per litre. These are regulated prices that apply nationwide. Nepal imports all petroleum products from India, making prices sensitive to Indian and global oil market changes.

Prices have historically fluctuated with global crude prices and Nepal-India trade conditions. Check the NOC website or local news for current rates before a long journey.

Fuel Station Availability

Kathmandu Valley

Petrol stations are abundant throughout the valley — on major roads, at ring road intersections, and along all major highways entering the city. Never a concern here.

Pokhara

Well-served by multiple stations along the main Prithvi Highway and Lakeside approach road.

Terai (East-West Highway)

Good coverage along the main highway. Stations appear in most bazaar towns at intervals of 20–40 km.

Hill Districts and Mountain Areas

Coverage drops significantly in mountain areas. Smaller towns may have informal fuel sellers (petrol in plastic containers) rather than proper stations. On routes like the Annapurna Circuit road, Mustang, or Dolpa approach roads, fuel availability is sparse and prices are higher (sometimes 2–3x city rates due to transport costs).

Planning Fuel on Remote Routes

• Fill up in the last major town before entering a remote area. Never set out into the hills with a tank below half.
• Carry a fuel canister (2–5 litres) as emergency reserve when riding in remote districts.
• Ask locals about the next fuel point — information from drivers familiar with the route is more reliable than any app.
• Note fuel quality: In very remote areas, petrol sold informally may be diluted or lower grade.

Fuel Availability During Shortages

Nepal has experienced periodic fuel shortages historically, particularly during border blockades with India. These have become less frequent since 2016, but awareness is useful. During a shortage, long queues form at stations and rationing applies. If travelling during any reported supply disruption, fill up early and carry reserves.

Payment

Most petrol stations in Nepal accept cash only. Carry NPR notes (NPR 100–1,000 denominations work well). Some urban Kathmandu stations have started accepting QR payment (eSewa, Khalti), but this is not universal.

Motorcycles: Fuel Range Considerations

A typical 150cc motorcycle in Nepal achieves 35–50 km per litre. A 10-litre tank gives a range of 350–500 km — enough for most city and valley riding. For remote mountain routes on an adventure bike, calculate your range conservatively and add a fuel canister.
