Nepal's free experiences are not consolation prizes for budget travellers -- many are simply the country's best.

Kathmandu Free Highlights

Walk the Boudhanath circumambulation path for free -- the outer kora (circuit) around the great stupa requires no entrance fee. Spin prayer wheels with pilgrims at dawn and watch butter lamps being lit at dusk. Pashupatinath's ghats are free to observe from the eastern bank across the river. The holiest Hindu site in Nepal is visible entirely without an entrance fee from this vantage -- cremation ceremonies, sadhus, and river rituals all visible. The old bazaar streets of Ason and Indra Chowk in central Kathmandu are a riot of spice vendors, marigold sellers, and metalwork shops -- no ticket, no pressure, just walking and looking. Swayambhunath's surrounding parkland is free; only the stupa platform charges foreigners (NPR 200 -- modest). The morning ritual at any neighbourhood temple in Kathmandu costs nothing and shows the real rhythm of city life.

Pokhara Free Highlights

Phewa Lake shoreline walk: the eastern shore path from Damside to the northern end costs nothing and takes you past fishing boats, water buffalo bathing spots, and mountain reflections on still mornings. Bindyabasini Temple on the north end of Lakeside is free and has Annapurna views from the hilltop. Davis Falls is NPR 30 -- essentially free. The international mountain museum is worth the NPR 300 fee but the surrounding gardens are accessible freely.

Trekking and Viewpoints

The Sarangkot viewpoint above Pokhara requires only the bus or taxi fare to reach (NPR 700 to NPR 1,000 return) -- no entry fee at the viewpoint itself. Nagarkot Viewpoint east of Kathmandu charges a small fee (NPR 100 to NPR 200) for the tower but the village roads give good views for free. Lower sections of all major trek routes are accessible for day hikes without trekking permits -- Phakding (below Namche) and Birethanti (below Ghorepani) are accessible this way.

Cultural and Festival Access

Every major Nepal festival is viewable from public streets at no charge. Dashain, Tihar, Indra Jatra, Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur -- these are community celebrations happening on public roads, squares, and temple courtyards. Watching is free, respectful participation is welcomed, and contributing a small offering at a temple altar is entirely optional.

Nature and Outdoors

Begnas Lake (16km east of Pokhara) is quieter than Phewa, free to walk around, and has better bird-watching. The Bagmati and Bishnumati river confluence areas in Kathmandu are underrated for morning walks through old neighbourhoods. Chandragiri forests above Thankot have hiking trails accessible before the cable car zone.

FAQ

Are all Nepal trekking routes free to access? No -- national park and conservation area permits are required for most major routes (Sagarmatha, ACAP, MCAP). TIMS cards are required for trekking. Day hikes to the permit boundary and back are generally unrestricted.

Is the Kathmandu Durbar Square really free? No -- Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares charge foreigners NPR 1,000, NPR 1,000, and NPR 1,500 respectively. These fees fund conservation efforts and are worth paying. The surrounding streets and neighbourhood temples outside the square boundaries are free.

What free things can I do if I have only one day in Kathmandu? Walk from Thamel to Ason market (20 minutes), continue to the Swayambhunath hill base and up the eastern staircase (30 minutes of exercise), cross to Boudhanath for the afternoon circumambulation, and end the day watching Pashupatinath from the river bank. Total transport cost: NPR 400 to NPR 600 in taxis. Entry fees: NPR 200 at Swayambhunath (optional). Total food: NPR 500 to NPR 800 at local restaurants. One of the world's great urban days for under NPR 2,000.
