Nepal Entry Requirements 2025: Complete Pre-Departure Checklist

A comprehensive checklist of everything you need — documents, permits, vaccinations, and more — before boarding your flight to Nepal.

Overview

Nepal's entry requirements in 2025 are manageable but layered. Beyond the basic visa, trekkers and adventure travelers need to layer on conservation permits, TIMS cards, and restricted area permits depending on their itinerary. This checklist covers everything from passport validity to health requirements so you arrive fully prepared.

Passport and Visa

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Nepal. Have at least two blank visa pages available. Obtain your Nepal visa on arrival, via the e-visa portal, or from a Nepal embassy in your home country. Indians need a valid Indian passport, Voter ID, Aadhaar, or PAN card.

Health and Vaccinations

Nepal has no mandatory vaccination requirements for entry. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and equivalent health authorities recommend: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies (for extended trips or animal contact), and Japanese Encephalitis (for travel to Terai region). If you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country, proof of yellow fever vaccination is required.

Customs and Currency

You may import up to NPR 25,000 in local currency and unlimited foreign exchange, provided amounts over USD 5,000 (or equivalent) are declared. Personal items for own use are generally duty-free. Professional camera equipment and drones require declaration and may need a permit from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

Trekking Documents

Depending on your route, you may need: TIMS card, ACAP permit, Sagarmatha/Langtang/other national park permit, restricted area permit. Research your specific itinerary and apply for all permits before leaving Kathmandu or Pokhara.

FAQ

Q: Do I need a yellow fever vaccination if transiting through an endemic country?

Yes. If your journey involves a stopover of 12 hours or more in a yellow fever endemic country (parts of sub-Saharan Africa and South America), Nepal immigration requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Brief airport transits under 12 hours are generally exempt but verify with your airline and Nepal immigration.

Q: Is a COVID-19 certificate still required?

As of 2025, Nepal has removed all COVID-19 related entry requirements including vaccination certificates and PCR tests. Standard health screening protocols remain in place at airports.

Q: What documents do I need for a drone?

Drones must be declared at customs. Flying a drone in Nepal requires authorization from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and is prohibited in national parks, military zones, and many trekking areas without special permission. Research this well before bringing a drone.
