Traveling Nepal During Dashain Festival

Dashain is Nepal's biggest festival — a 15-day celebration of the goddess Durga. Here's what to expect if you travel Nepal during this major autumn event.

Overview

Dashain is Nepal's most important and longest-running festival, spanning 15 days during the bright fortnight of the Nepali month of Ashwin (September–October). The festival celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura and is observed by Hindus across the country. For travelers, Dashain offers an authentic window into Nepali family life, religious practice, and national culture — but it also brings challenges with transportation and business closures.

When Dashain Falls

Dashain dates change each year according to the lunar Nepali calendar. The most important days are:

  • Ghatasthapana (Day 1): Planting of jamara (barley seedlings) — marks the festival's start.
  • Fulpati (Day 7): Royal kalash brought from Gorkha to Kathmandu.
  • Maha Ashtami (Day 8): Major animal sacrifices at temples, particularly Durga temples.
  • Maha Nawami (Day 9): Continued worship; blessing of vehicles with flower garlands and tikka.
  • Vijaya Dashami (Day 10): The main day. Elders apply tikka (rice and vermillion) to foreheads of younger family members. Massive family gatherings.
  • Days 11–15: Continued tikka ceremonies and family visits.

What You Will See

Kathmandu transforms during Dashain. Markets overflow with new clothes, sweets, and offerings. Streets fill with bamboo swings (ping) traditionally erected at Dashain. Animal sacrifice at Durga temples peaks on Ashtami and Nawami — this is visible and intentional, not hidden. Families receive a blessing called tikka from the eldest member, and this ceremony continues for five days after Vijaya Dashami.

The sky over Kathmandu fills with kites on the main Dashain days — a centuries-old tradition marking the end of monsoon clouds and open skies.

Travel Challenges During Dashain

Transport: The days immediately before and after Vijaya Dashami see the highest domestic travel demand of the year. Buses from Kathmandu to all districts are booked out weeks in advance. Flights to regional airports are full. If you need to travel by public transport during Dashain, book one to two months ahead.

Business closures: Government offices, banks, and many private businesses close for the core Dashain days (typically five to seven days around Vijaya Dashami). Hotels and tourist restaurants remain open, but smaller shops and local services may close.

Prices: Hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara raise rates during Dashain because domestic tourists travel heavily. Book accommodation early.

What Travelers Gain

If you are invited into a Nepali family's home for tikka and Dashain feast, accept. This is among the most genuine cultural experiences available in Nepal. The feast includes sel roti (sweet fried bread), various meat dishes (goat is traditional), and sweets. The hospitality is genuine and warm.

FAQ

Q: Is it disrespectful to watch animal sacrifices at temples during Dashain?

Sacrifice is a religious practice, not a performance for tourists. Watching quietly and respectfully from a distance is acceptable. Do not photograph actively sacrificing priests without permission. Do not interrupt or comment negatively on the practice.

Q: Is trekking possible during Dashain?

Yes, but guides and porters often prefer to return home for Dashain. Staffing on trekking routes can be reduced. Most lodges on popular routes remain open and staffed. Solo trekking with good preparation is fine during this period.
