Nepal Child-Friendly Restaurants: Where to Eat With Kids
Finding the right places to eat with children in Nepal. A guide to child-friendly restaurants, safe food choices, and navigating menus in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan.
Eating out with children in Nepal is generally pleasant and affordable. The challenge is not finding food children will eat -- Nepal's tourist restaurant scene is extensive and international menus are widely available -- but rather finding environments that are genuinely comfortable for families with young children and making food choices that minimize health risks.
General Principles
Children should eat only from restaurants with visible hygiene standards: clean preparation areas, hand-washing facilities, hot food served hot. In tourist areas of Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Sauraha, the restaurant standard is generally adequate for children. Be more cautious with street food and very cheap local eateries, not because the food is inherently unsafe, but because the risk of contamination is higher.
Kathmandu
Thamel District
Thamel has dozens of restaurants catering to international travelers. Several are genuinely child-friendly with wide menus, comfortable seating, and patient staff.
Pumpernickel Bakery (Thamel): A Kathmandu institution. Excellent cakes, bread, pastries, and breakfast items. Children gravitate to the pastry counter. Suitable for a leisurely breakfast or afternoon snack stop.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
The Bakery Cafe (multiple locations): A reliable chain with sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, and baked goods. Clean, air-conditioned, consistent quality.
OR2K (Thamel): Middle Eastern-inspired menu with hummus, pita, salads, and wraps. The cushioned seating area with low tables suits toddlers. One of the more spacious and relaxed restaurant environments in Thamel.
Rosemary Kitchen and Coffee House (Thamel): Known for reliable pasta, soups, and Nepali dishes in a calm, garden-adjacent setting. Good for families who want a quieter meal.
Patan / Jawlakhel
Cafe du Temple (Patan Durbar Square): Set in a restored building adjacent to the square, with a rooftop view. Serves Nepali and international food. The outdoor seating area overlooks the square directly, giving children a perfect vantage point while eating.
Pokhara (Lakeside)
Most restaurants along the Pokhara Lakeside promenade serve a combination of Nepali, Indian, Chinese, Italian, and international dishes suitable for children.
The Moondance Restaurant: Reliable international menu, good pizza, calm atmosphere suitable for family meals.
Little Tibetan Tea Garden: Tibetan momos, thukpa (noodle soup), and butter tea. The space is calm and the food is mild and child-friendly.
The Olive Cafe: Western breakfast items, sandwiches, and fresh juice. Popular with families for breakfast and lunch.
Chitwan (Sauraha)
Restaurant options in Sauraha are more limited but adequate. Most lodges serve their own food, which is typically the safest option. For eating outside lodges, look for restaurants with visible food preparation and busy clientele.
What Children Typically Eat Well in Nepal

What to Avoid for Young Children
- Spicy curries (unless your children are already accustomed to chili)

- Raw or undercooked meat and fish
- Street food from vendors without hand-washing facilities
- Ice in drinks (unless your restaurant specifically uses filtered water for ice)
