Nepal Bus Travel: A Complete Guide for Every Budget

Everything you need to know about travelling by bus in Nepal — classes, booking, comfort, safety, and what to expect.

Bus travel is the backbone of Nepal's intercity transport network. From air-conditioned tourist coaches to packed local buses navigating winding mountain roads, the range of options is vast. This guide covers the full spectrum.

Bus Classes in Nepal

Local Buses

These are the cheapest option and are used primarily by locals for medium and long-distance routes. Seats are basic, schedules are loose, and buses often fill well beyond capacity. However, they run from virtually every district headquarters and connect towns that tourist buses do not reach.

Express Buses

A step above local, express buses make fewer stops and are somewhat faster. Seating is still basic but not as overcrowded as ordinary local services.

Deluxe and Tourist Buses

These are modern coaches with assigned seating, luggage storage underneath, and often air conditioning. Companies like Greenline, Gorkha Travels, and Nepal Travels operate on popular tourist routes including Kathmandu–Pokhara and Kathmandu–Chitwan. Tickets are sold at hotel desks, travel agencies, and bus company offices.

Night Sleeper Buses

On longer routes (Kathmandu–Biratnagar, Kathmandu–Lumbini), sleeper buses with reclining seats or bunk-style berths are available. They depart in the evening and arrive in the early morning, saving hotel costs for one night.

Major Bus Stations in Kathmandu

  • Gongabu New Bus Park (also called Naya Bus Park): the main terminal for most long-distance routes heading north, east, and west.
  • Kalanki Bus Stop: departure point for many routes heading south and southwest including Chitwan and Pokhara via the Prithvi Highway.
  • Ratna Park / Old Bus Park: serves shorter local routes and some suburban destinations.

Booking Tickets

Tourist buses can be booked through travel agencies in Thamel or directly at company offices. For local and express buses, you typically buy tickets at the bus park on the day of travel, though for popular routes during peak season booking a day ahead is wise. Several online platforms and apps now allow advance booking for major routes.

Luggage

Bags go on the roof or in the under-bus compartment on tourist coaches. Keep valuables with you inside the bus. Roof luggage is common on local buses and is typically roped down.

Comfort and Conditions

Even on tourist coaches, roads in Nepal can be rough. Mountain routes especially involve sharp bends, steep gradients, and occasional landslide clearances. Expect travel times to be longer than the map distance suggests. Kathmandu to Pokhara by bus typically takes 6–8 hours depending on road conditions and the route taken.

Food and Breaks

Long-distance buses stop at roadside dhabas (eateries) for meal breaks — typically once or twice on a full-day journey. These stops are usually 20–30 minutes long. Dal bhat and momos are common.

Safety

Mountain roads carry inherent risk. Travel during daylight whenever possible. Avoid the cheapest, most overcrowded local buses for very long routes. Reputable tourist bus companies maintain their vehicles better and have safer driving standards.

Cost

Local bus fares are very low by global standards — NPR 200–600 for most intercity routes. Tourist buses cost more, ranging from NPR 800 to NPR 2,500 for popular routes, but the added comfort and reliability are usually worth it for most travellers.

Bus travel in Nepal is an experience in itself. With good planning and the right class of service, it is one of the most affordable and immersive ways to travel across the country.
