Nepal's budget backpacker trail is one of the best established in Asia. Low accommodation costs, incredible trekking access, and cheap local food make it possible to travel well on very little.

Accommodation on a Budget

Thamel dormitory beds start at NPR 400 to NPR 700 per night. Pokhara lakeside dormitories are similar. On trekking routes, teahouse accommodation ranges from NPR 200 (basic) to NPR 600 per bed -- sometimes free if you eat two meals at the same teahouse. Booking sites like Hostelworld list Kathmandu budget options; trekking route teahouses are walk-in.

Eating Cheap

Dal bhat is Nepal's answer to every budget: unlimited rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and pickles for NPR 250 to NPR 400 at local restaurants. Momos (dumplings) cost NPR 150 to NPR 250 for 10 pieces. Roti with tea costs NPR 80 to NPR 120. Stick to local Nepali and Tibetan restaurants in Thamel backstreets rather than the tourist-facing places on the main drag -- food is equally good at half the price. On trekking routes, eating at your sleep teahouse is mandatory to keep accommodation costs down.

Transport on a Budget

Local buses everywhere: NPR 30 to NPR 500 depending on route length. Skip tourist buses unless the route genuinely warrants it (KTM to Pokhara is worth the upgrade). Walk within cities wherever possible -- Kathmandu neighbourhoods are compact and interesting on foot.

Free and Low-Cost Activities

Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) entry is NPR 200 for foreigners. Walking Kathmandu's old city squares costs nothing except Durbar Square entry fees. Sunrise over the Himalaya from Nagarkot (NPR 200 to NPR 300 for the viewpoint) rivals helicopter scenic flights at a fraction of the cost. Boudhanath stupa entry is free for the outer circumambulation.

Trekking Costs

Annapurna Circuit independently: permits cost NPR 5,000 total, teahouses average NPR 500 to NPR 1,500 per night, meals NPR 300 to NPR 800 each. Total 18-day circuit: NPR 80,000 to NPR 120,000 all-in. EBC costs more due to park fees and higher teahouse rates above Namche.

FAQ

What is the cheapest month to visit Nepal? Low season (June to August monsoon, December to February winter) offers lower accommodation prices, though monsoon brings trekking disruption and winter closes high passes.

Can I buy trekking gear cheaply in Kathmandu? Thamel has dozens of outdoor gear shops selling both genuine equipment and lower-cost alternatives. Budget NPR 5,000 to NPR 15,000 for basic trekking gear from local brands.
