Nepal Autumn Trekking Season Guide (October–November)

Why autumn is Nepal's premier trekking window — clear skies, stable weather, perfect temperatures, and the most spectacular mountain views of the year.

Overview

October and November form Nepal's premier trekking season. The monsoon has retreated, washing the atmosphere clean, and the Himalayas emerge in razor-sharp clarity against deep blue skies. Temperatures at trekking elevations are comfortable — cold but not brutal — and trail conditions are dry and stable. If you have one chance to trek in Nepal and you can choose the month, choose October.

Why Autumn Stands Apart

The monsoon ends across most of Nepal by late September or early October. The weeks immediately following are the clearest of the entire year. Particulates washed from the atmosphere, combined with low humidity, produce visibility conditions that allow you to see peaks over 200 km away from high vantage points. Kala Patthar, Poon Hill, and Thorong La all offer views during this period that are simply not matched at other times of year.

Temperature at Altitude

Daytime temperatures in October at 3,500 m sit around 10–15°C, dropping to -5 to -10°C at night. By November, night temperatures fall further, reaching -15°C or below on high passes. Layering is essential, but the cold is manageable with proper gear and well-built tea house accommodation that runs wood stoves in the evening.

Trail Conditions

Trails are at their driest and best-maintained after the monsoon. The summer rains repair some eroded sections and settle dust. River crossings are lower than monsoon levels. Mud that made trails slippery in September is gone. The only hazard is early snowfall at very high passes in late November, which can temporarily close routes like Thorong La or the Renjo La.

Popular Routes in Autumn

Everest Base Camp Trek: The most iconic autumn experience. Book lodges and Lukla flights two to four months in advance for October. The trail from Namche to Everest Base Camp is at its most photogenic under autumn light.

Annapurna Circuit: The classic high-altitude loop hits peak form in October. Thorong La is reliably clear. The teahouses at Manang and Thorong Phedi fill quickly — reserve ahead.

Upper Mustang: Though rain-shadow Mustang is good in monsoon, autumn brings comfortable temperatures and open skies across the high desert plateau.

Langtang and Gosaikunda: A less-crowded alternative with excellent views of the Langtang Himal and dramatic sacred lakes.

Booking and Costs

Autumn is the most expensive season. Flights to Lukla and accommodation in busy trail towns like Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Manang book out months in advance. Trekking permit fees are the same year-round, but lodge prices peak in October. Budget an extra 20–30% compared to spring or winter costs.

FAQ

Q: Is November still good for trekking?

Yes, especially early November. Views remain excellent and crowds thin noticeably after the first week. The trade-off is colder nights and a higher chance of early snow on the highest passes. Lower-altitude circuits like Ghorepani-Poon Hill and Langtang are ideal in November.

Q: Should I book a guided tour or go independently?

Both work in autumn. Independent trekking on standard routes (EBC, Annapurna Circuit) is well-established and straightforward. Guided tours are recommended for remote routes, restricted areas, or first-time trekkers unfamiliar with altitude sickness management.
