Nepal Accommodation Prices by Season
How much to budget for accommodation in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and on trekking routes in different seasons — and how to find value without sacrificing comfort.
Overview
Nepal offers accommodation across a very wide price range — from USD 5 dormitories to USD 400+ luxury lodges. Prices vary not just by quality tier but also significantly by season. Understanding the seasonal price pattern helps you budget accurately and find genuine value.
Kathmandu Hotel Prices by Season
Kathmandu's hotel market reflects trekking season demand and festival timing.
| Season | Budget (USD/night) | Mid-Range (USD/night) | Luxury (USD/night) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct–Nov (Peak) | 15–30 | 60–120 | 180–400+ |
| Mar–Apr (Spring) | 12–25 | 50–100 | 150–350 |
| Dec–Feb (Winter) | 8–18 | 35–70 | 100–250 |
| Jun–Sep (Monsoon) | 6–15 | 25–55 | 80–200 |
The difference between monsoon and October peak rates at equivalent properties can exceed 100%. Luxury hotels in Kathmandu (Dwarika's, Hyatt Regency, Soaltee) use dynamic pricing aggressively during festival periods.
Pokhara Prices by Season
Pokhara follows a similar pattern but has a more compressed price range. The Lakeside area (Baidam) concentrates most tourist accommodation.

Trekking Route Tea House Prices
On trekking routes, accommodation is provided by tea houses (mountain lodges). The model for most routes below 4,000 m is inexpensive or free accommodation in exchange for eating meals at the lodge. Above 4,000 m, room charges apply regardless of meal purchase.
Standard tea house room (below 4,000 m): NPR 300–500 (free if eating at the lodge) in most seasons. In peak October on EBC or Annapurna Circuit, some popular lodges at key stops charge NPR 500–1,000.
Above 4,000 m (Dingboche, Gorak Shep, Thorong Phedi): NPR 500–1,500 depending on season and altitude. Rooms include a bed in a basic room or dormitory. Heating is limited — your sleeping bag provides warmth.
Luxury mountain lodges: The EBC route now has several high-end lodges (Everest Summit Lodge, Yeti Mountain Home) charging USD 150–400+ per night including meals. These are not representative of standard tea house costs.
Booking in Advance vs. Arriving Without Reservation
In peak season (October), Kathmandu airport hotels, popular Thamel properties, and key trekking route lodges (Namche, Dingboche) book out in advance. Book Kathmandu accommodation at least 6–8 weeks ahead for October. Tea houses on the trail technically do not take advance bookings for individuals, but trekking agencies with partner lodges can guarantee beds.
In monsoon and winter, walk-in availability is excellent throughout Nepal. Negotiating a slight discount for a multi-night stay is standard practice and usually accepted at smaller guesthouses.
FAQ
Q: Do Kathmandu hotels charge tourist tax?
A 13% VAT and 10% service charge apply to most registered hotel bills. Some budget guesthouses quote inclusive prices; ask if the quoted rate includes tax and service. Receipts should show the breakdown.
Q: Are there hostels in Kathmandu?
Yes. Thamel has several well-run hostels with dormitory beds for USD 5–8 and private rooms for USD 10–20. Zostel and several independent operators offer good social atmospheres for solo travelers.
