Overview

Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) is the commercial and administrative hub of the Khumbu region and the most important acclimatisation stop on the Everest Base Camp trek. Most trekkers spend two nights here before continuing up the valley -- the classic acclimatisation day hike to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 m is strongly recommended on the rest day. Namche has over 30 lodges and hotels spread across its horseshoe-shaped bowl, offering the widest choice of the entire EBC route.

Top Lodges

The Khumbu Lodge & Restaurant (upper Namche, above the main bazaar) has the best mountain views -- Thamserku (6,608 m) and the surrounding peaks are visible from the dining room windows. Rooms NPR 1,200 to 2,000 depending on room size and season.

Hotel Yeti (central Namche) is the most popular mid-range option -- clean rooms, hot showers, charging points, wi-fi, and an extensive menu including pizza, momos, and apple pie. Rooms NPR 1,500 to 2,500. The baker who operates the attached bakery from 7 am is a Namche institution.

Three Passes Lodge (lower Namche) is excellent value at NPR 800 to 1,200 with generous common area heating (critical at 3,440 m evenings that drop to -5 degrees Celsius).

Acclimatisation Day

The mandatory Namche rest day is best used hiking up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m, 1.5 hours one way) for morning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam before lunch at the hilltop. Return via the Khumjung village for the Sir Edmund Hillary School and the alleged yeti scalp at the monastery.

FAQ

Is there ATM access in Namche Bazaar?
Yes. Two ATMs are operational in the bazaar area (NIC Asia and Siddhartha Bank). Carry cash from Kathmandu as a backup -- machines occasionally run out of currency during peak season.

What is the altitude sickness risk at Namche?
At 3,440 m, altitude sickness can affect some individuals, especially those who ascend quickly from Lukla (2,840 m) without adequate rest. Spending two nights at Namche is the standard protocol. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and poor sleep.

Can I get a hot shower in Namche lodges?
Yes. Most mid-range and upper lodges have solar-heated hot showers, either included in room rate or at NPR 200 to 500 extra. Check whether hot water is available in the morning (solar heating) or afternoon.
