Nagarkot Sunrise Guide for Couples
How to experience the famous Nagarkot Himalayan sunrise as a couple, with hotel recommendations, timing, and photography tips.
Nagarkot is Nepal's most accessible panoramic viewpoint from Kathmandu. Sitting at 2,175 metres on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, it faces one of the widest arcs of Himalayan peaks visible from any easily reached viewpoint in the country.
The Sunrise Experience
At Nagarkot, the sunrise is a full event rather than a single moment. The sequence begins about 40 minutes before the sun actually rises, when the night sky lightens and the mountain silhouettes become visible. The peaks take on a purple-grey quality at this stage.
As the sun approaches the horizon (visible from the eastern plains below Nagarkot), the mountains begin changing colour from the top down. The first colour hit is a deep salmon-orange on the very highest points. Over the next 20-30 minutes, the light works down the mountain faces as the sun climbs. The peaks shift through gold to brilliant white as direct sunlight reaches them fully.
Staying to watch this full sequence, not just the moment of sunrise, is what makes Nagarkot special. Most couples who arrive only for the sunrise itself leave before the best colour.

Getting There
Nagarkot is 32 kilometres east of Kathmandu. A private taxi from Thamel takes 1.5-2 hours, depending on traffic. For a sunrise visit, the taxi typically leaves at 4:30-5 am.
The road climbs through Bhaktapur and then winds up into the hills. The last section is a steep, winding ridge road. Make sure your driver is experienced on this road, particularly if it is dark.
Option 1: Same-day trip -- Leave Kathmandu at 4:30 am, watch sunrise, have breakfast in Nagarkot, return by 10-11 am. Tiring but feasible.
Option 2: Overnight stay -- Drive up the previous afternoon, watch sunset, stay overnight, watch sunrise the next morning, return mid-morning. This is the recommended approach for honeymooners.
Where to Stay
The Fort Resort, Nagarkot: The most sophisticated property on the ridge. The stone building was constructed to resemble a Rana-era fort. Mountain-view rooms and a rooftop terrace make it the premium option. Rates: NPR 8,000-18,000 per night.
Club Himalaya: A large resort hotel on the ridge with panoramic views, multiple restaurants, and well-maintained rooms. Pool available in warmer months. Rates: NPR 6,000-12,000 per night.
Hotel at the End of the Universe: A small, quirky property with mountain-view rooms and a simple restaurant. More budget-oriented but the views are the same. Rates: NPR 2,500-5,000 per night.
View Quality by Season
Mountain views from Nagarkot are seasonal:
- October-November: Clearest visibility. The air is freshly washed by monsoon. On the best days, over 30 peaks are named on the panorama.
- February-March: Good visibility most mornings. Slight pre-monsoon haze develops in afternoon.
- December-January: Cold but clear. Views excellent on mornings without ground fog.
- Monsoon (June-August): Clouds obscure mountains for days at a time. Not recommended.
The view sweeps from Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) in the far west through the Langtang range and on the clearest days to Everest (8,849 m) in the southeast.
Photography at Nagarkot
For the best sunrise photography, set up at the viewpoint on the ridge (near the watch tower) 30-40 minutes before sunrise. The viewpoint has a 270-degree unobstructed horizon.
Use a tripod for pre-dawn shots. A wide-angle lens captures more of the panorama. Shoot in RAW format if possible, as the colour range at sunrise benefits from post-processing latitude.
For couple portraits, the summit watch tower itself makes a dramatic backdrop. Ask another guest or your hotel to take shots for you.
Combining Nagarkot with Bhaktapur
The most efficient Kathmandu-area itinerary combines a Bhaktapur visit with a Nagarkot overnight:
Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur (45 min). Spend the morning in Bhaktapur's heritage area. Drive to Nagarkot (30 min) for the afternoon and sunset. Overnight at Nagarkot.
Day 2: Sunrise from Nagarkot. Breakfast. Return to Kathmandu via Changu Narayan Temple (an important stop that adds only 20 minutes to the drive).
