Overview

Nagarkot (2,175 m) is a hilltop village 32 km east of Kathmandu, famous for one of the widest panoramic Himalayan views accessible by road from the capital. On clear mornings from November to February, the horizon stretches from the Annapurna Range in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east -- a 200-km arc of peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ganesh Himal, and Langtang Lirung. The standard overnight stay involves arriving in the afternoon, watching sunset over the valley, and rising at 5:30 am for the sunrise mountain panorama.

Accommodation Options

Club Himalaya Nagarkot (the Hill Top Hotel) is the flagship property -- a 42-room resort at the ridgeline edge with heated rooms, a pool (heated in winter), and spectacular mountain-facing balconies. Rates from NPR 12,000 including dinner and breakfast. Book the mountain-view deluxe rooms specifically.

Hotel at the End of the Universe (a beloved local institution despite its quirky name) has budget rooms from NPR 3,000 and is popular with trekkers completing the Bhaktapur-Nagarkot one-day hike. Mountain views from the restaurant are excellent.

Fort Resort Nagarkot is a mid-range property (NPR 6,000 to 10,000) with good mountain views and a restaurant. The fort architecture is more boutique than its contemporaries.

FAQ

What percentage of mornings is the Himalayan panorama visible from Nagarkot?
In October and November, visibility rates are 70 to 80 percent. December and January are slightly cloudier but still excellent. April and May are hazy due to pre-monsoon dust. Monsoon months (June to September) are almost entirely cloud-covered.

Is there trekking from Nagarkot?
Yes. The Nagarkot to Changu Narayan temple trail (4 to 5 hours) is a classic day hike through rhododendron forest with valley views. The Nagarkot to Dhulikhel trail (5 to 6 hours) is also well-marked and popular.

Do Nagarkot resorts provide heating in winter?
The better mid-range and luxury properties have electric heaters and sometimes wood-burning stoves. Budget guesthouses may have no heating -- bring warm layers for January and February nights when temperatures drop to -5 degrees Celsius.
